Birthday Party Ideas for 10–12 Year Olds in Austin

Birthday Party Ideas for 10–12 Year Olds in Austin https://backyardstarz.com/wp-content/themes/fildisi/images/empty/thumbnail.jpg 150 150 Zulfiya Gaziev Zulfiya Gaziev https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/9de0d944b8a91bc7a4d887f91b7b9d9906dbd7ca919543b6c1f3f8b39899693c?s=96&d=mm&r=g

When my son turned 10, I quickly realized that planning a birthday party for a tween is a totally different game than planning one for a 7- or 8-year-old. The big “invite the whole class” party at a trampoline park or indoor play place suddenly didn’t feel like the right fit anymore. What he wanted was something smaller, cooler, and more experience-driven — a real activity with a few close friends, not a kiddie party with a packed schedule.

That shift caught me a little off guard. The invite list got smaller, but the list of things he actually wanted to do got a lot more interesting. VR, go-karts, climbing, games, movies, outdoor adventures — all of a sudden I realized I needed to get a little more creative. And honestly, when I first started looking for ideas, I mostly found myself asking friends and piecing things together one suggestion at a time.

That’s why I put this guide together. If you’re planning a birthday party for a 10-, 11-, or 12-year-old in Austin, the best strategy is usually a smaller group, a bigger experience, good food, and enough downtime for them to just hang out. Tweens still want to celebrate, but they don’t want anything that feels babyish, overly themed, or overly managed. I hope this gives you a few solid ideas to start with — and helps you find something that feels right for your kiddo.

At-Home Party Ideas for 10–12 Year Olds

At-home parties can be amazing for tweens because you can make them feel older without paying venue prices. The trick is to stop thinking “kid birthday party” and start thinking “hangout with a main event.”

Give them one anchor activity, good food, and a little space to be social. That’s the formula.

A great birthday party idea for a 10 to 12-year-old in Austin is a backyard movie night. This allows friends to hang out, enjoy good food, and watch a full movie together, creating an event-like atmosphere with a relaxed vibe.

This age is perfect for a backyard movie night because tweens can actually sit through a full movie, and they love anything that feels like an event.

The easiest format is:

  1. Friends arrive and hang out.
  2. Serve food before the movie.
  3. Start the movie as the main event.
  4. Leave time at the end for cake, photos, and a little more free time.

If you want it to feel like a real outdoor theater without buying or setting up all the gear yourself, Backyard Starz is a great fit for this age. We bring the inflatable screen, projector, sound system, and we’re the only vendor in the Austin-area that includes lounge chairs in different color combinations so the party feels more like an outdoor premiere than a little-kid movie night.

A glow party is one of the easiest “at-home but still cool” tween party ideas. You do not need a big production — just a playlist, glow sticks, LED lights, snacks, and maybe a small photo corner.

Add a mocktail station, candy bar, or build-your-own snack table and suddenly it feels like a real party without a complicated schedule.

Best for: Social kids, music lovers, and groups that like to move around.

Karaoke works really well for this age because it gives the party structure without making it feel too managed. You can use a karaoke app, a speaker, and a microphone, then let the kids rotate through songs.

It is especially fun for groups that are more silly and social than competitive.

Best for: Outgoing tweens, small friend groups, and kids who love music.

This may sound like a lot of work, but you do not need to build a full escape room to get the vibe. A few clues around the house, a simple mission, and a small prize at the end can feel very “big kid.”

You can make it as simple as:

  • A locked box or final envelope
  • 5–7 clues hidden around the house
  • A mystery theme
  • A small prize or treat at the end

Best for: Kids who love puzzles, mysteries, video games, or problem-solving.

A build-your-own dinner setup is a great way to make food feel like part of the activity. Taco bar, pizza bar, nachos, burger sliders, baked potatoes, or ice cream sundaes all work well.

Tweens like having some control over what they make, and it keeps everyone busy without you having to lead a formal activity.

Best for: Mixed groups, picky eaters, and parties where food is part of the fun.

If the weather is nice, a backyard bonfire party can be perfect for tweens. String lights, music, blankets, s’mores, and a cozy setup make the whole thing feel older and more relaxed.

This works especially well for smaller groups because the point is not to entertain them nonstop — it is to create a fun hangout environment.

Best for: Smaller groups, fall or winter birthdays, and kids who want a relaxed party.

For tweens who love the whole “treat yourself” vibe, a mini spa party can be a really sweet option. Think face masks, nail polish, fluffy headbands, cucumber water, snacks, and a cozy movie afterward.

The key is to keep it simple and not overdo the little-kid party elements. At this age, the fun is in making it feel a little more grown up.

Best for: Smaller groups, creative kids, and tweens who want something calmer.

A lot of 10–12 year olds still love a good Nerf battle, especially if you make it feel more like a team challenge than a little-kid free-for-all.

Set up teams, obstacles, bases, and short rounds with different missions. Capture the flag, last team standing, and target challenges all work well.

If you do not want to buy gear, set up obstacles, and manage the whole thing yourself, Backyard Starz also offers Nerf party setups in the Austin area.

Best for: Competitive kids, active groups, and tweens who still love outdoor games.

Big Experience Ideas

This is the age where experiences often start winning over traditional birthday parties. Many 10–12 year olds would rather celebrate with a smaller group doing something memorable than have a large party with a strict schedule.

If your tween wants something that feels genuinely cool, these Austin experience ideas are a strong place to start.

VR is one of the most exciting birthday options for this age because it feels instantly cool and different. It also works well for smaller groups since everyone gets a turn and the activity is built in.

For Austin-area VR parties, Sandbox VR is a good place to start.

Indoor skydiving feels like a true milestone birthday idea. It is memorable, high-energy, and very “big kid” without requiring an outdoor adventure.

If your tween wants something unique, iFLY Indoor Skydiving is worth looking into.

Go-karts are a great fit for competitive tweens. It feels grown up, it is exciting, and the race format gives the party a natural structure.

K1 Speed is one of the most obvious Austin-area options for this type of party.

See Austin arcades and family entertainment venues

Bowling is one of the safest tween birthday formats because it is social, active, and easy to plan. Kids can bowl, grab food, play arcade games, and hang out between turns.

A few local options to look into include:

Laser tag still works really well for 10–12 year olds, especially kids who like action and team-based competition. It gives them a clear activity while still feeling more exciting than a basic party room setup.

Austin-area options include:

Ninja-style venues are one of my favorite formats for this age because they are active, challenging, and structured without feeling too young. They are especially good for kids who like climbing, swinging, racing, and American Ninja Warrior-style obstacles.

Austin-area options include:

Climbing is a fantastic tween birthday idea because it feels adventurous and a little grown up. It also works well for smaller groups and kids who enjoy a physical challenge.

Austin Bouldering Project is a good local option to check out.

If your tween likes games but wants something beyond a typical arcade, interactive game rooms can be a great option. They feel modern, competitive, and very age-appropriate for tweens.

Activate Games is a strong local pick for this type of party.

Best Venue Categories for 10–12 Year Old Birthday Parties in Austin

If your tween wants to get out of the house, this is the age where venue parties start to make a lot of sense. Ten-, eleven-, and twelve-year-olds usually want something that feels more like an outing than a traditional kids party, which is honestly great news for parents.

The best venue ideas for this age usually fall into two buckets: high-energy experiences and social hangout spaces.

Some tweens want action and competition. Others just want something that feels a little more grown up and gives them space to be with friends.

Arcades and family entertainment centers are easy because they give tweens options. They can bounce between games, food, and attractions without you having to structure every minute.

This format works especially well for mixed groups where not every kid likes the same thing.

Unique Experience Venues

VR, indoor skydiving, interactive game rooms, and similar venues are great for tweens who want something that feels more like a special outing than a typical birthday party.

If your child rolls their eyes at anything that feels too little-kid, this is usually one of the safest categories to start with.

Ninja, Parkour, and Obstacle Gyms

For active kids who still want movement and challenge, ninja-style venues are a great middle ground. They feel exciting and athletic, but more grown up than a basic indoor play place.

See Austin ninja and parkour birthday venues

Arts and Crafts Studios

Not every tween wants laser tag, go-karts, or trampolines. For creative kids, art studios, pottery painting, and maker-style spaces can be a really strong fit.

The nice thing about this format is that it gives guests something to do, something to take home, and still leaves plenty of room for talking and hanging out.

See Austin arts and crafts birthday venues

Trampoline Parks

Trampoline parks can still work for plenty of 10–12 year olds, especially high-energy kids, but I would say it depends on the tween.

Some kids still love it. Others are ready for something that feels a little more “experience” and a little less classic birthday venue. If your child still enjoys jumping, dodgeball, obstacle courses, and open movement, it can be a good fit.

See Austin trampoline park birthday venues

Bowling, Laser Tag, and Other Social Competition Formats

This age loves a little friendly competition, especially when food and downtime are built in. Bowling and laser tag both work because they give tweens something to do without forcing them into a tightly structured schedule the whole time.

Mobile Vendors and Add-Ons for 10–12 Year Olds

By the time kids hit 10 to 12, you usually do not need a full-blown entertainer to carry the whole party. What works better is adding one or two things that make the party feel more elevated, more personal, and a little less like a little-kid birthday.

At this age, the best add-ons are the ones that either create a cool experience or make the whole party feel more polished without adding a ton of work for you.

Party Photographer or Content Capture

This can feel optional until you realize you are about to spend the whole party taking pictures instead of enjoying it.

For tweens, having someone capture group photos, the cake moment, and the silly in-between stuff can actually be worth it — especially if you are doing something visual like a movie night, glow party, spa setup, or outdoor hangout.

Mobile Spa or Self-Care Setup

For tweens who love the “treat yourself” vibe, a spa-style add-on can make the party feel extra special without needing a venue.

Think mini facials, nail stations, fluffy headbands, and a few fun extras. This works especially well for smaller groups and parties that are more social than high-energy.

Dessert Table, Candy Bar, or Fancy Drink Station

This age notices the details. A cute dessert table, candy bar, mocktail station, or build-your-own soda bar can go a long way toward making the party feel more grown up.

It also doubles as something for them to gather around, take photos of, and talk about.

Photo Booth or Photo Corner

Tweens love a photo moment. It does not have to be complicated — a simple backdrop, good lighting, and a few props can be enough.

If you want to make the party feel more polished, this is one of the easiest ways to do it.

Interactive Vendor or Specialty Add-On

Depending on the group, this age can still really enjoy something interactive, especially if it feels unique. A science-style experience, specialty dessert vendor, hands-on craft station, or mobile game setup can work well if it matches the vibe of the party and does not feel too little-kid.

Parent Planning Tips for Tween Parties

A few things make this age much easier to plan for:

Keep the guest list manageable

A lot of tween parties work best with a smaller group and a better experience. Six to twelve kids is usually a good range. You can go bigger for bowling, arcades, or trampoline parks, but smaller is often better for VR, sleepovers, movie nights, spa parties, and experience-based outings.

Avoid over-scheduling

Tweens do not usually want a party host directing every minute. One main activity, food, cake, and hangout time is enough.

Give them some say

At this age, your child probably has opinions. Let them help choose the activity, playlist, movie, food, or invite list. The more the party feels like “their” idea, the better it usually goes.

Think smaller but cooler

You do not have to invite the whole class anymore. A smaller group doing something memorable often feels more special than a big party with a generic activity.

FAQ: Birthday Parties for 10–12 Year Olds in Austin

  1. How long should a birthday party be for a 10–12 year old?

For this age, 2 to 3 hours usually works best. Tweens can handle a longer party than younger kids, especially if there’s a real activity built in. If you’re hosting at home, two hours is usually enough. If you’re doing more of an experience-style party, stretching closer to three hours can work really well.

  2. How many kids should I invite?

A lot of tween parties work best with a smaller group and a better experience. Somewhere in the 6 to 12 kid range usually feels manageable and still fun. If you’re doing something bigger like bowling, an arcade, or a trampoline park, you can go a little larger. If you’re doing something more experience-driven, smaller is often better.

  3. Is a sleepover still a good option at this age?

Yes, absolutely — for the right kid and the right group. A sleepover can be a great tween party because it naturally feels older and more social. The easiest version is to keep the guest list small, plan one main activity, and avoid trying to make every minute feel “scheduled.”

  4. What are the best at-home party ideas for 10–12 year olds?

The best at-home tween parties usually feel more like an event than a traditional kids party. A Backyard Starz movie night, glow party, karaoke, DIY spa night, a build-your-own dinner bar, or a backyard hangout with one strong activity are all solid options.

  5. Is Backyard Starz still a good fit for this age?

Yes — especially for tweens who like the “hangout plus activity” vibe. A Backyard Starz movie night works really well because it feels like an outdoor premiere instead of a little-kid movie party. And for kids who still love competitive games, a Nerf setup can be a huge hit if the group is into it.

  6. Do I still need party favors for this age?

Not really. By this age, the party itself is usually the takeaway. If you want to send something home, it’s better when it feels tied to the experience — a photo strip, leftover candy from a snack bar, a small self-care item, or something they made during the party.

  7. What are some party options for active 10 to 12-year olds?

For active birthday parties in Austin for 10-year-olds, consider options like go-kart racing at K1 Speed or a VR experience at Sandbox VR. These activities are exciting and cater to the competitive nature of tweens, making them feel more grown-up and memorable compared to traditional parties.

  8. What are some unique birthday party experiences for 10 to 12-year olds in Austin?

Unique birthday experiences for 10-year-olds in Austin can include a backyard movie night with Backyard Starz, which creates an outdoor premiere atmosphere. Alternatively, a mini spa or self-care party can offer a calmer, more relaxed celebration that tweens will enjoy.

Best Kids Birthday Party Places for Ages 3–4 in Austin

Planning a birthday party for a 3- or 4-year-old can get overwhelming fast, mostly because little kids are adorable and unpredictable in equal measure. For toddlers, the best birthday party places in Austin are those that feel safe, simple, and perfectly suited to their developmental needs—venues where little ones can enjoy themselves without becoming overwhelmed or upset. Below, I’ve carefully selected some of the top Austin birthday party spots specifically ideal for toddlers, balancing fun, age-appropriate activities, and ease of management for parents.

What Actually Works for this Age Group

For three- and four-year-olds, the best birthday venues are usually the ones that feel contained and low-chaos. At this age, kids do not need a packed schedule or a giant attraction. Most of the time, one built-in activity is more than enough especially if the space gives them room to explore a little without feeling overwhelmed.

This is also the age where “all ages” can be a little misleading. A place might technically allow toddlers, but that does not always mean it is a great fit for a preschool birthday party. What usually works best is a venue that feels naturally toddler-friendly: imaginative play, simple climbing and movement, hands-on exploration, or gentle animal interaction. In my experience, those kinds of spaces hold their attention much better than anything too loud, too big, or too overstimulating.

Indoor venues are often the easiest choice for this age, especially in Austin, because they take weather stress off your plate and usually make the whole party feel more manageable. That does not mean outdoor options cannot work, they absolutely can, but if your goal is “easy,” indoor play spaces, pretend-play venues, and calm museum-style settings are usually where I would start.

And the other big thing to keep in mind is that shorter is better. Three- and four-year-olds do not need a two-and-a-half-hour event to feel celebrated. A venue that gives them something fun to do right away, lets them move around a little, and makes the party feel simple for parents is usually a much better fit than anything overly ambitious.

With that in mind, here are the birthday party places in Austin I’d personally have at the top of my list for ages 3 and 4.

If you already know the kind of venue you want, the easiest next step is to browse by type.

Browse by Venue Type

If you already have a sense of the kind of place your child would love, browsing by venue type can be the easiest way to narrow things down. At this age, I usually think less about what sounds the coolest and more about what actually matches a their energy, attention span, and comfort level. Some little kids want to climb and move. Some want to pretend play. Some are happiest around animals. And some really do best in a calmer, more contained environment.

Indoor play cafés and play spaces

For a lot of families, this is the easiest place to start. Indoor play spaces tend to work really well for ages 3–4 because the activity is built in, the environment is weather-proof, and kids can usually jump right into the fun without needing much instruction. If your main goal is to keep things simple and let little kids move around safely, this is one of the strongest categories to look at first.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/indoor-playgrounds/

Pretend-play and imaginative spaces

This is one of my favorite directions for preschool birthdays because it feels so naturally matched to this age. Three- and four-year-olds love playing “restaurant,” “grocery store,” “doctor,” or “house,” and imaginative-play venues make that the party without needing a complicated plan. If your child is the kind of kid who gets completely absorbed in pretend play, I would look here early.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/3-4/

Animal and mini-farm experiences

For little kids who light up around animals, this category can be such a win. Animal-focused venues often feel memorable without being overly stimulating, and they give kids something genuinely exciting to focus on right away. If you want the party to feel a little more special or different from a standard indoor play space, this is a really strong option.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/animals/

Educational and museum-style venues

This is a great category if you want something hands-on, engaging, and a little more outing-like. The best museum-style venues for this age still feel playful, but they tend to have a slightly calmer rhythm than the bigger energy venues. If your child is curious, loves exploring, or you want a party that feels a little more “experience” and a little less “chaos,” this is a smart direction.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/3-4/

Simple arts and crafts venues

Not every three- or four-year-old is ready for a structured craft party, but in the right setting, simple art-based venues can work beautifully. The best ones for this age keep things easy, visual, and low-pressure. If your child likes painting, coloring, or making things with their hands, this can be a sweet option—especially for smaller groups.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/arts-crafts/

And if you’re still not sure which direction makes the most sense, this is how I’d think about it based on your child’s personality and what usually makes the day easier for parents.

How I’d Choose Based on Your Kid

If I were choosing a birthday place for a three- or four-year-old, I would worry a lot less about what sounds the most impressive and a lot more about what actually fits my kid. At this age, personality matters almost as much as age. Some little kids run straight into the action. Some need a minute. Some would be thrilled to pet a goat and call it the best day of their life. Others just want to climb, slide, and keep moving.

If your child is shy or gets overwhelmed easily, I would lean toward smaller, calmer spaces with built-in imaginative play. Places like Play Street Museum, Toybrary, or a gentler play café setup usually make more sense than a giant, high-energy venue. At this age, the best party is often the one where your child feels comfortable enough to actually enjoy it.

If your child is high-energy and always on the move, then I’d look at indoor play spaces and bigger movement-based venues first. Indigo Play, Catch Air, and even Mt Playmore can make a lot of sense for kids who are happiest when they can climb, roam, and burn energy right away. The nice thing about those places is that you usually do not have to “create” the entertainment — it is already there.

If your child is an animal lover, I would not overthink it. Animal venues are such a strong fit for ages 3–4 because the excitement is immediate and very real. Austin Zoo or Rose & Grace Mini Farm can be a great direction if your child lights up around animals and you want the day to feel memorable without needing a lot of extra party structure.

If your main priority is keeping the whole thing easy for parents, I would usually start with indoor venues that have a clear party setup and a naturally toddler-friendly flow. Places like Almost Grown Play Café, Pikopye’s Town, or Thinkery tend to make life easier because they already feel designed for the kind of pacing younger kids need.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/indoor-playgrounds/

And if you know you want something indoors no matter what, that is honestly a very fair decision in Austin. For this age, indoor venues are often the easiest way to avoid weather stress, overstimulation, and last-minute chaos.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/indoor-playgrounds/

At the end of the day, the “best” birthday place for ages 3–4 is usually the one that matches your child’s personality, keeps the activity simple, and does not ask too much from you as the parent.

More Toddler-Friendly Birthday Venues to Consider

If you want to compare a few more options, here are additional birthday party places in Austin that can work well for ages 3–4. These may not all be as universally easy as my top picks, but they are still worth a look depending on your child’s personality, your location, and the kind of party you want to host.

Splash Shack Austin
Indoor water park Indoor

Splash Shack

Splash Shack is a good option if your child loves water and you want something indoor and active, especially for older 4-year-olds who are ready for a little more excitement. We recently attended a birthday party here, and while the space is on the smaller side, it was clean, safe-feeling, and really well-suited for the 4–6 year old crowd, with a shallow interactive water play structure, slides, sprayers, and a giant dump bucket that kept the kids moving without the stress of deep water. It’s probably not an all-day destination — two hours felt a little long for our crew — but for a younger birthday group, it’s a fun way to burn energy indoors and escape the Austin heat.

FAQ

What are the best toddler-friendly birthday party places in Austin?

Some of the best birthday party places for toddlers in Austin include Play Street Museum, which offers a calm and imaginative pretend-play environment ideal for preschoolers. Another great option is Family Barn, designed for active toddlers while ensuring a simpler, age-appropriate experience.

What kinds of venues work best for 3 year olds?

For 3-year-olds, I’d usually look first at indoor play cafés, pretend-play spaces, smaller toddler-focused venues, and gentle animal experiences. At this age, simple is better. One clear activity, a contained setup, and a space that doesn’t feel too loud or too big usually works best.

What kinds of venues work best for 4 year olds?

Four-year-olds can usually handle a little more movement and stimulation than 3-year-olds, so your options open up a bit. Indoor play spaces, imaginative play venues, aquarium or zoo visits, and some art-based venues can all work really well. If your child is closer to 5 in energy and maturity, you may also be able to consider slightly bigger activity venues.

Are indoor party venues better for this age?

A lot of the time, yes. Indoor venues are often the easiest option for ages 3–4 because they take weather stress off your plate and usually make the whole party feel more manageable. In Austin especially, indoor spaces can be a huge relief when it’s hot, rainy, or just unpredictable.

How long should a birthday party be for a 3- or 4-year-old?

Usually, 90 minutes to 2 hours is plenty. Most little kids do not need a long event to feel celebrated, and shorter parties often go more smoothly. At this age, a venue with one built-in activity and a little time for cake and presents is usually enough.

What should I look for before booking a toddler party venue?

I’d check a few basics first: whether the space really feels age-appropriate, how contained it is, how many kids the package includes, how long you get the space, and what is actually included in the party package. It’s also worth checking food rules, cleanup expectations, and whether the venue feels manageable for little kids who may need a little flexibility.

Are animal venues good for this age?

Yes, they can be a really great fit. A lot of toddlers and preschoolers are fascinated by animals, and animal venues can make the party feel memorable without needing a lot of extra planning. They tend to work especially well if your child loves animals and you want the day to feel a little different from a standard indoor play party.

What’s the easiest type of venue for parents?

Usually, it’s an indoor venue with a built-in activity and a clear party package. Play cafés, toddler play spaces, and museum-style venues often make life easiest because the activity is already there and the pacing tends to work well for younger kids. The easier the venue is for your child to understand and enjoy right away, the easier the whole party usually is for you too.

Is it okay if my 3- or 4-year-old doesn’t want a big party?

Absolutely. At this age, a “successful” birthday does not need to be a huge production. A small guest list, a simple venue, and one activity your child genuinely enjoys can be more than enough. For a lot of toddlers and preschoolers, smaller and calmer is actually the better choice.

Should I choose a venue based on my child’s personality or just what looks fun online?

I would always start with your child’s personality. Some little kids love action and movement. Some want pretend play. Some are happiest in a quieter environment with a smaller group. The venue that looks the most exciting online is not always the one that will feel best in real life for your child.

Teen Birthday Party Ideas in Austin

Teen Birthday Party Ideas in Austin https://backyardstarz.com/wp-content/themes/fildisi/images/empty/thumbnail.jpg 150 150 Zulfiya Gaziev Zulfiya Gaziev https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/9de0d944b8a91bc7a4d887f91b7b9d9906dbd7ca919543b6c1f3f8b39899693c?s=96&d=mm&r=g

Teen birthday parties are a whole different category. At this age, they usually don’t want anything that feels childish or over-planned—they want something fun to do with their friends that actually feels worth leaving the house for. This guide rounds up the best teen birthday ideas in Austin, whether you’re planning an at-home hangout, a bigger experience, or something in between.

The easiest formula is usually a smaller group and one strong main event. That could be a movie night, go-karts, VR, bowling, an escape room, or even just a really well-done hangout at home with great food and a clear vibe. You don’t need to over-program it. In fact, the more scheduled it feels, the less fun it usually is.

A party length of around 2 to 3 hours works well for most teen plans. If you’re doing a venue or experience, the activity will naturally fill most of that time. If you’re hosting at home, it helps to think in phases: people arrive and hang out, there’s one main thing to do, then food, cake, and more time to just be together.

Food matters more at this age than party favors ever will. Teens will absolutely remember the snack spread, the pizza, the mocktails, or the dessert bar before they remember a themed decoration. So if you’re deciding where to put your effort, put it into the experience and the food.

Now let’s get into the ideas that work best for teens at home — the ones that feel fun and social without requiring you to turn your house into an event venue.

At-Home Teen Birthday Ideas

At-home teen parties work best when they feel less like a birthday party and more like a hangout that just happens to be really well planned. This is not the age for a packed schedule or five different activities. The move is simple: pick one main thing, make the food feel fun, and give them enough space to actually hang out.

Backyard Movie Night (Backyard Starz)

This is one of the best at-home options for teens because it feels like a real event without being cheesy. It’s social, it’s low-pressure, and it gives the night a clear centerpiece. Backyard Starz makes it easy to turn your yard into an outdoor theater with the inflatable screen, projector, sound system, and lounge seating. If you want the best value, our DIY is a great option. If you want the full white glove, and hassle free exprience, setup and takedown is the way to go.

Karaoke Night

This one works especially well for the right group. You don’t need much beyond a speaker, a karaoke app, and a little confidence. Add mocktails or themed snacks and it instantly turns into a memorable and a laughter filled night.

Backyard Fire Pit Night

For teens who like a more relaxed vibe, this is a strong option. A fire pit, cozy seating, snacks, and music goes a long way. It’s especially good for smaller groups and cooler weather.

Game Night

For a teen group that loves competition, this one is easy. You can do video games, card games, Mario Kart, party games, or a mix. The trick is keeping it casual enough that it still feels social, not like a formal competition bracket.

DIY Mocktail and Snack Bar Party

This works well as the main event or as part of a bigger hangout. Set out fun drinks, toppings, candy, and snacks and let them make their own combinations. Tweens and teens love anything that feels a little more grown up and photo-worthy.

Spa or Self-Care Night

For the right group, this is still a great option. Face masks, nail polish, fluffy robes, snacks, and a good playlist is enough. It does not need to be elaborate to feel special.

Nerf Challenge Night (for the competitive group)

This definitely depends on the group, but for teens who still love competition and don’t mind being a little silly, a Backyard Starz Nerf setup can be a lot of fun. The key is leaning into challenge-style rounds and team play so it feels more like a game night than a kid party.

Pizza and a Series Binge

Honestly, sometimes the best teen birthday idea is the simplest one. Pick a show, order pizza, put out dessert, and let the night be about hanging out. Not every teen wants a huge production, and that’s completely fine.

If your teen would rather get out of the house and do something that feels more like an experience, here are the big ideas that tend to work best in Austin.

Big Experience Ideas for Teens in Austin

This is really where teen birthdays start to make the most sense. Instead of trying to host a party, you’re usually better off planning one solid experience and letting that be the night. Teens do not need a packed agenda. They need something that feels fun enough to get excited about, enough time to hang out, and food at some point.

If you want the birthday to feel a little more special and a little less like “we ordered pizza at home,” these are the experience-style ideas that tend to land best.

VR and Immersive Gaming

This is one of the easiest teen wins because it already feels cool before anyone even gets there. VR works especially well for smaller groups, and it gives them something to do without forcing awkward small talk or too much structure. It feels social, but there’s still a clear activity built in.

Go-Karts

If your teen likes anything competitive, go-karts are an easy yes. It feels more grown up than a typical kid party, and there’s enough adrenaline built in that the whole thing automatically feels memorable. This is also a good option when you want something that doesn’t need extra decorating or “party energy” layered on top.

Bowling and Arcade Hangouts

This is one of the safest options for teen birthdays because it gives them a mix of activity and downtime. They can bowl, wander to the arcade, grab food, and talk in between without the whole thing feeling overly structured. It’s especially good for mixed groups where not everyone wants the exact same kind of fun.

Laser Tag and Competitive Game Venues

For the right group, this still hits. The key is that it feels more like a group challenge and less like a little-kid birthday. If your teen has a friend group that likes competition, laser tag, interactive game rooms, and challenge-based venues are a strong fit.

Indoor Skydiving

This is more of a “big birthday” option, but if you want something unforgettable, it’s definitely up there. It feels unique, it photographs well, and it gives the night a real centerpiece.

Climbing Gym Party

For adventurous teens, climbing is a great middle ground between active and social. It feels more interesting than a generic party venue, and it works especially well for smaller groups who like doing something a little different.

Escape Rooms

Escape rooms are great for teens because they feel collaborative, a little dramatic, and just challenging enough to be fun. This one works best for friend groups who actually like doing things together instead of just sitting around.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-ideas/escape-room-party/

Concert, Comedy Show, or Live Event

This is a great option when your teen is less interested in “birthday activities” and more interested in doing something they’d actually choose on their own. A concert, comedy show, sports game, or other live event can work really well if you pair it with dinner or dessert.

Lake Day or Boat Day

This one is more of a bonus idea than an everyday recommendation, but for milestone birthdays or smaller groups, it can be a really fun option. The key here is keeping it simple and treating it more like a hangout outing than a full-blown production. There are a lot of boat rental options in Austin, both around Lake Travis and Lake Austin. The one that we’ve used before is Keep Austin Web Boat Rentals, but like I said, there are plenty of other options.

Big Outdoor Movie Night

If your teen is more chill than adrenaline-seeking, this can be such a great option. It feels social, it photographs well, and it gives the whole night a real main-event vibe without forcing anyone into a schedule. I might be a little biased here, but Backyard Starz really is a great choice if you want a premium outdoor movie theater experience that still feels affordable.

If you want something a little easier to book and simpler to plan, here are the venue-based party ideas that work especially well for teens in Austin.

Venue-Based Teen Party Ideas in Austin

If your teen wants to get out of the house, venue-based parties are usually the easiest path to a birthday that actually feels worth celebrating. At this age, the best venues are the ones that give teens something to do without forcing the whole night into a tight schedule. You want a place that feels social and a little elevated.

Bowling and Arcade Hangouts

This is one of the safest bets for teens because it gives them a little bit of everything. They can bowl, wander, eat, play games, and hang out without the whole thing feeling overly structured. If you’ve got a mixed group, this type of venue usually works really well because everyone can find something to do.

VR and Interactive Game Venues

If your teen wants something that feels current and different, this is a good option. VR and interactive game spaces already feel like an event, so you don’t need to pile on decorations or a big party plan. It’s especially good for smaller groups that want a shared experience.

Go-Karts and Competitive Venues

For teens who love competition, this is an easy win. Go-karts, racing, laser tag, and challenge-based venues all work well because they naturally create energy and excitement without you having to script the night.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/arcades-family-entertainment/

Climbing, Ninja, and Active Challenge Venues

Some teens still want something physical, they just want it to feel more grown up than a trampoline park. Climbing gyms, ninja gyms, and obstacle-style venues are great for that. They feel active and social, but still cool.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/ninja-parkour/

Arts, Pottery, and Creative Spaces

Not every teen wants speed, noise, or competition. For creative teens, pottery painting, art studios, and maker-style spaces can be a really good fit. These tend to work best for smaller groups and teens who want to hang out while doing something, not just run around.

A few Austin picks for teen birthdays

If you want a few local places to start with, these are some of the venues that make the most sense for teen groups:

If you want the full list organized specifically for teens, start here → /austin/kids-birthday-party-places/teens/

And if you’re hosting at home or just want to level things up a little, a few simple add-ons can make a teen party feel way more polished without creating more work for you.

Teen Party Add-Ons That Make a Difference

By the time kids are teenagers, you usually do not need an entertainer to run the party. What works better is adding one or two things that make the night feel more polished, more intentional, and a little more special. At this age, the best add-ons are the ones that improve the vibe, make the food feel fun, or give teens something worth posting about.

Photo Booth or Photo Corner

Teens love a photo moment, even the ones who pretend they don’t. The good news is you do not need anything elaborate. A clean backdrop, decent lighting, and one or two fun props can be enough to make the party feel more put together. If you want to take it up a notch, a real photo booth or content setup can make the whole night feel more event-like and less casual.

Party Photographer or Content Capture

This is one of those add-ons that feels unnecessary until you realize you spent the whole party taking pictures instead of enjoying it. For teens, this can be especially nice because group photos, cake moments, and all the little in-between shots usually matter more than favors or decorations ever will.

Mocktail Bar or Fancy Drink Station

This is such an easy win for teen parties. A good drink station makes the whole thing feel more grown up without actually being complicated. Mocktails, sodas, fruit garnishes, fun cups, and a little sign or menu can go a long way. It also gives people something to gather around, which helps socially.

Dessert Table or Late-Night Snack Setup

At this age, the food matters. A dessert table, candy bar, cookie board, or late-night snack setup can make the party feel thoughtful without adding a bunch of structure. It is one of the easiest ways to make an at-home party feel elevated.

Mobile Spa or Self-Care Setup

For teens who love that whole self-care, skincare, nails, and fluffy-headband vibe, this can be a really fun add-on. It works especially well for smaller groups and parties that are more about hanging out than doing one big activity.

Keep the Add-Ons Simple

The biggest mistake at this age is trying to do too much. Teens usually do not need five different extras. One strong main plan, good food, and one thoughtful add-on is usually more than enough.

And if you are still figuring out what teens actually want, how many people to invite, or whether they even want a party at all, here are the questions that come up most.

  1. How many people should I invite for a teen birthday?

Smaller groups usually work better for teens. Somewhere in the 6 to 12 person range tends to be the sweet spot, especially if you’re doing something experience-based. A smaller group almost always makes the whole thing feel more relaxed, more social, and honestly more fun.

  2. What’s the best at-home teen birthday idea?

A good at-home teen party usually needs one strong anchor. a Backyard Starz movie night is a great option because it feels like an actual event without requiring a complicated schedule. Glow hangouts, karaoke, mocktail nights, game tournaments, and fire pit nights also work really well depending on the group.

  3. What are the best places for teen birthday parties in Austin?

The strongest venue ideas for teens are usually the ones that feel more like an outing than a kid party. Bowling, arcade hangouts, VR, go-karts, laser tag, climbing, and interactive game venues are all strong options.

  4. Are sleepovers still a thing for teens?

Yes — for a lot of teens, absolutely. The difference is that teen sleepovers usually work better when they feel low-pressure. Think food, one main activity, and then time to just hang out. You do not need to over-theme it or pack the night with activities.

  5. What food works best for teen parties?

At this age, food matters way more than favors. Pizza still works, but anything that feels a little more fun or customizable usually lands even better — mocktail bars, snack boards, dessert tables, taco bars, late-night snacks, or a “build your own” setup. If the food feels thoughtful, the whole party feels more put together.

  6. What’s a good budget-friendly teen birthday plan?

A smaller group and one great activity is almost always the best budget move. That could mean bowling, a Backyard Starz movie night, a fire pit hangout, karaoke at home, or a mocktail-and-movie setup. Teens do not need a giant production — they just want something that feels intentional.

  7. Is Backyard Starz a good fit for teen parties?

Yes, especially for teens who want something social without a ton of structure. Backyard movie night works really well because it feels polished, fun, and different without being childish.

Birthday Party Ideas for 7–9 Year Olds in Austin

Birthday Party Ideas for 7–9 Year Olds in Austin https://backyardstarz.com/wp-content/themes/fildisi/images/empty/thumbnail.jpg 150 150 Zulfiya Gaziev Zulfiya Gaziev https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/9de0d944b8a91bc7a4d887f91b7b9d9906dbd7ca919543b6c1f3f8b39899693c?s=96&d=mm&r=g

Ages 7 to 9 are the sweet spot where birthday parties get really fun. Kids can actually follow rules, they love team games, and they want something that feels like a big deal. Here are my favorite party ideas for this age in Austin—at home, outdoors, and at venues—organized so you can pick a plan fast and move on with your life.

TL;DR What Works Best for This Age Group

Believe it or not, but kids in this age group actually want structure, and they’re old enough to handle it. This is the age where team games work, rules make sense, and a party can have a main or anchor event without falling apart. It’s also the age where kids start caring about what feels cool, so choosing an idea with a clear theme or challenge tends to land really well.

A party length of around 2 hours usually works great for this age, especially if you have a strong anchor activity. If you’re hosting at home, you can still keep it closer to 90 minutes if you want, but most 7–9 year olds can comfortably do two hours as long as they’re moving and engaged.

The easiest way to plan a party at this age is to pick one activity, something like a nerf battle, an outdoor movie night, a trampoline park, a ninja gym, or a “mission-style” scavenger hunt. You don’t need a packed schedule, but having one or two quick game rounds or challenges can make the party feel more organized and exciting.

Food timing matters too, because once kids get hungry, energy and moods drop fast. I like to do snacks fairly early, then cake around the halfway point. After cake, kids usually get a second burst of energy, which is the perfect time for a final game round, free play, or one more “battle” before pickup.

Now let’s get into the ideas, starting with at-home party options that work really well for ages 7–9 (including a few that are basically guaranteed to be a hit).

At-Home Party Ideas for 7–9 Year Olds

At-home parties are awesome at this age because kids are old enough to get into games and challenges, but you still have full control. The key is to give them one main event and let everything else be snacks, cake, and a little free play between rounds. If you try to plan too many activities, it gets chaotic fast. If you pick one strong anchor, the party practically runs itself.

Nerf Battle Party

If you want a party idea that kids this age lose their minds over, it’s going to be a Nerf Party. Seven- to nine-year-olds love team games, short rounds, and anything that feels like a mission. The only problem….parents often end up buying a ton of blasters, darts, gear, and bunkers which can be quite pricey. Backyard Starz is Austin’s top provider of mobile Nerf Parties.

If you’re looking for a hassle-free party setup, we got you covered. We bring the inflatable bunkers, safety gear, blasters, and everything else you need for a real battle without having to spend a fortune buying all that gear yourself. And if you want the best value, our DIY option lets you run it on your schedule while still getting the full setup.

Backyard Movie Night Party

Ages 7–9 are perfect for movie night because kids can actually sit through a movie, but it still feels magical. This is one of the easiest “wow” parties because you don’t have to entertain them every minute.

Backyard Starz is Austin top choice for outdoor movie nights and we’re the only company that provides inflatable lounge chairs in a variety of different colors. With Backyard Starz, you have the option to do it yourself, or have us set everything up for a hassle-free experience. We bring the inflatable screen, projector, sound system, lounge chairs in different color combinations, and optional add-ons like yard games and popcorn machine. It’s a full outdoor theater experience without you having to buy equipment yourself, which can quickly add up.

Scavenger Hunt Party

Scavenger hunts are a fantastic way to engage kids aged 7 to 9, and you can easily make them even more exciting by adding creative themes! For instance, a pirate treasure hunt can have kids following a map filled with clues leading to hidden gold coins or treasures around your home or yard. Alternatively, you could opt for a superhero mission where kids must complete challenges to save the day, collecting items that represent their superpowers along the way. These themed hunts not only add a story element that kids love but also encourage teamwork and problem-solving skills. Plus, you can easily tailor the complexity of the clues to suit the age group, ensuring everyone has a blast while feeling like they’re part of an adventure!

Bounce House or Backyard Obstacle Course Party

If you want a high-energy party that doesn’t require you to run games, bounce houses and obstacle course-style setups are easy wins. Kids will self-entertain for a long time. If you don’t want inflatables, you can DIY an obstacle course with cones, hula hoops, jump ropes, and a timer.

Craft Maker Party (Tie-Dye, Slime, Jewelry, Art, hats, etc.)

This is the best at-home option for kids who want something creative instead of competitive. At 7–9, they can handle more “project” style crafts and they love taking something home they made themselves. Keep it to one project and have everything set out before people arrive.

Backyard Sports Tournament

Soccer shootout, basketball HORSE, kickball, wiffle ball pick one sport and make it a mini tournament. This works really well if your kid has a sporty friend group and you want something simple and active.

Splash Party

If it’s warm out, splash parties are still a top-tier idea for this age. Slip-and-slide, water balloons, sprinklers, and freeze pops go a long way. This is another one where kids basically entertain themselves.

This is a great way to slow things down without forcing kids to sit still too long. DIY pizza, taco bar, or “decorate your own” desserts makes the food part feel like an activity.

Hopefully the above at-home party ideas gave you a few things to consider, however if you’d rather book a place and let someone else handle the setup, cleanup, and the entertainment, here are venue-based party ideas that work really well for ages 7–9 in Austin.

Venue-Based Party Ideas for 7–9 Year Olds

If you’d rather not host a bunch of 7 to 9 year olds at your house, which I completely get, then venue parties are a fantastic next best option. Kids this age have the stamina for longer play, they love structured activities, and they’re old enough to handle rules without it turning into chaos. The best part is that most venues already have a built-in “main event,” which means you don’t have to entertain them every second.

Here are some venues that work especially well for this age.

Trampoline Parks

This is one of the most popular venue formats because it’s basically impossible for kids not to have fun. They run, jump, play dodgeball, and burn off energy while you supervise from a safe distance.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/trampoline-parks/

Arcades and Family Fun Centers

For kids who love games and variety, arcades and family fun centers are an easy win. This format is also great if you’ve got a wide age range in the group or siblings coming along.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/arcades-family-entertainment/

Ninja / Parkour Gyms

If your child loves climbing, swinging, jumping, and obstacle courses, ninja gyms are a dream venue. This is one of my favorite formats for ages 7–9 because it feels adventurous and structured at the same time.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/ninja-parkour/

Arts and Crafts Venues

Not every kid wants high-energy chaos. Craft venues are great for kids who love creating and for parents who want a party that’s a little quieter. Pottery painting, art projects, jewelry-making, this age can handle a real “project” and loves taking it home.

/austin/kids-birthday-party-places/arts-crafts/

Animals and Farms

If your child is an animal lover, like my 7 year-old, then this is a strong choice even for 7 to 9 year olds. It’s interactive, memorable, and doesn’t require you to run games.

Unique Experiences

Some kids at 9 are starting to want things that feel more like an experience than a “kid venue.” VR, indoor skydiving, bigger attractions all of these can work especially well for smaller groups or milestone birthdays.

Here are a few venue picks for ages 7–9

If you want a few local options to begin with, these tend to be a great fit for this age:

If you want the full list organized specifically for this age (with more options and easier comparisons), go here:

And if you want the party to feel extra special without you running every minute, mobile vendors and entertainers are a great fit for ages 7–9.

Mobile Vendors & Entertainers

At ages seven to nine, mobile vendors really shine because kids can stay engaged for longer, follow instructions, and actually participate. This is the age where you can bring in one “wow” activity and it carries the whole party. If you want the party to feel big without you planning ten different games, this is the easiest way to do it.

Interactive Science Show

Science shows are perfect for 7–9 because kids are genuinely curious and love anything that feels like a live experiment. The best ones are hands-on and interactive, think bubbles, simple demos, and kids getting to participate instead of just watching.

Magician

A good kids magician is still a big hit at this age, especially if they pull kids into the show and keep the pacing quick. It’s one of the easiest ways to get a whole group focused at the same time.

Here are a few local options:

Mobile Petting Zoo / Animal Encounter

Yes, animal encounters still work really well at 7–9—especially for animal lovers. It’s interactive, it feels special, and it naturally slows the party down for a bit (in a good way).

If you’re looking for local vendors, here are a few options:

Balloon Artist / Face Painter

This one works best when it’s not the only activity. It’s perfect for arrival time, snack breaks, or as something kids can do while others are running around.

Here are a few local options:

And if you’re looking for a movie or a nerf party at-home, give Backyard Starz a look:

Keep in mind that the 7 to 9 age range is especially popular for at-home parties featuring a strong main event, so vendors and entertainers tend to book up quickly during spring and fall weekends. If you have a specific at-home party idea in mind—whether it’s a Nerf battle setup, a backyard movie night, or a themed scavenger hunt—reach out early to secure your preferred date and ensure the best experience for your child’s celebration.

FAQs

  1. How long should a birthday party be for a 7–9 year old?

For this age, 2 hours usually works really well. Kids have the stamina for it, and it gives you enough time for an activity, food, and cake without feeling rushed. If you’re hosting at home and want to keep it simpler, 90 minutes can still work—just choose a strong anchor activity.

  2. How many kids should I invite?

Most 7–9 parties feel manageable in the 10–15 kid range, depending on your space and the activity. If you’re doing something like Nerf or a venue party, a slightly bigger group can work because the activity naturally keeps kids busy.

  3. What are the best at-home party ideas for this age?

This is the perfect age for parties that have a clear “main event.” The biggest hits tend to be:
    Nerf battle party
    Backyard movie night
    Scavenger hunt mission party
    Minute-to-win-it games

  4. Is a Nerf party safe for 7–9 year olds?

Yes—as long as you keep a few basics in place: clear boundaries, safety rules, and eye protection. The best Nerf parties for this age are short rounds with simple game modes (not complicated rules). If you want the full setup without buying gear, this is exactly what Backyard Starz provides.

  5. What’s the easiest “wow” party with minimal planning?

A Backyard Starz movie night is hard to beat for low effort with high payoff. You get a full outdoor theater vibe without you having to manage the party the entire time.

  6. What are the best venue ideas for 7–9 year olds in Austin?

The easiest venue formats for this age are:
    – Trampoline parks
    – Ninja / obstacle course gyms
    – Arcades / family fun centers
    – Arts & crafts studios (for creative kids)

  7. What food is easiest for this age?

Keep it simple and familiar: pizza, tacos, nuggets, fruit trays, chips, and cupcakes. Kids this age tend to eat in quick bursts, so “grab and go” foods work best.

  8. Do I need party favors for 7–9?

Not really. If you want to do something, make it small and tied to the party—like a “winner” medal for games, a glow stick, a small craft they made, or a simple treat bag. The activity is what they remember.

Austin is a vibrant city with no shortage of venues to celebrate your kid’s birthday party. When my family and I first moved to Austin I struggled to find a place that would fit my budget and keep the kids entertained, so I know, first hand, how stressful it can be to plan a birthday event. Fortunately, Austin has an incredible variety of options to choose from. From local party vendors, trampoline parks, and outdoor adventures, there is no shortage of unique options to choose from. Below, I’ve compiled a list of 16 venues my kids and I enjoy the most. Hopefully this will save you a bit of time and lots of headache 😊. Let’s get started!

16. Main Event

Address: 13301 North US Hwy 183, Austin, TX 78750
Age Range Recommendation: 5+ years old

While Main Event made it onto my top 10 list, there were a couple of issues that prevented it from ranking higher, which I’ll detail below. My kids and I have visited this venue on numerous occasions and despite having a great time, one major drawback we noticed was the lack of cleanliness. From sticky game consoles to trash littering the corners, it became clear that cleanliness wasn’t a top priority here. Pro tip – keep a stash of sanitizing wipes handy. You’re going to need them.

There’s no denying that Main Event is a big venue. It is filled with a diverse range of entertainment options for kids and adults alike. From bowling lanes and arcade games to laser tag and a gravity ropes course, there’s little chance of your little one not being thoroughly entertained here.

Another point of contention for us was the food service. Although the menu offers a variety of options, from pizza to burgers, the wait times were just a little too long. This could pose a problem, especially when dealing with hungry kids after a long day of play. After a while, the wait started to take away from the overall experience, and it’s something I believe they should address.

Despite these issues, Main Event Austin still holds a spot on my list, primarily for the sheer variety of entertainment options it provides. It’s a place that promises a fun-filled day for kids, making it a considerable option for a birthday venue in Austin. Below, I’ve even jotted down a quick breakdown of the birthday packages they offer and a ballpark figure of what you might have to shell out per kid.

  • All you can play: This package costs $11.99 per guest and includes a 2 hour “all you can play” pass, a $10 Fun Card for each guest, and 500 points for the birthday girl/boy.

15. The Dinosaur Park

Address: 893 Union Chapel Road Cedar Creek, Texas 78612
Age Range Recommendation: between 3 and 7 years old

Roaring its way into the 12th spot, The Danosaur Park in Bastrop, TX, is a fun and wallet-friendly choice for an outdoor birthday dinosaur museum – if you don’t mind the drive. What’s unique about this park is its life-sized dinosaur replicas, which are both fun and educational, especially for children fascinated by these prehistoric creatures. The nature trail offers an enjoyable day of exploration, and you can even bring your dog, provided it weighs under 30 pounds. The park also features several playgrounds and a sandbox, where kids can dig for fossils. However, my kids often spend most of their time in the gift store, no surprise, which is packed with really cool dinosaur toys.

Regarding their birthday packages, they offer a 2-hour rental of their covered pavilion/picnic tables. The reservation costs only $40 for 2 hours, with the option to extend at $20 for each additional hour. It’s important to book extended time in advance, as failing to do so will incur a $20 fee for every 15 minutes over.

Note that the pavilion can only be reserved for a minimum of 7 children, costing $10 per child. For parties of 15 or more children, the cost per child is reduced to $9.00. The park allows you to bring your own food, pastries, and decorative items, but alcoholic beverages are prohibited. So, for a party of 12 kids, you’re looking at an average expense of $140 plus food.

14. Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park

Address: 3944 Ranch Rd 620 S Bldg. 5, Bee Cave, TX 78738
Age Range Recommendation: between 5 and 14 years old

urban air bee cave

If your children enjoy jumping and bouncing as much as mine do, Urban Air is the ideal destination for them. With three locations to choose from – Bee Cave, Cedar Park, and one in South Austin – it provides a wide variety of activities for kids of all ages. From trampoline basketball and dodgeball to a foam pit, there’s something for everyone. We often visit the Bee Cave location, which is their newest facility. However, before it was built, I used to take my kids to the Cedar Park location. The drive to both locations is roughly the same for us, but we particularly like going to Bee Cave because it features indoor skydiving, something their Cedar Park location does not offer.

Urban Air is a popular birthday destination, and for the right reasons. It offers a convenient, hassle free service and plenty to keep the kids busy. Being a popular birthday destination also means that it’s usually jam-packed on the weekends so you may want to plan ahead and book a table or a private room for your birthday.

You can choose from three packages.

  • The Ultimate package starts at $425 and accommodates up to 10 guests, featuring all of the park’s main attractions, such as the sky rider, ropes course, climbing wall, VR, and more.
  • The Deluxe package starts at $319 but does not include the sky rider, ropes course, climbing wall, or VR.
  • For a more budget-friendly option, the Basic package costs $269 but you only get access to the trampolines and nothing else.

After choosing a package you also have the option to either reserve a private room for an extra $50 or reserve a basic table which is included in the total price of the package. A private room comes with 2 large one-topping pizzas and a party host. If you want to add more kids to the invite, you’ll pay $27.99 plus tax per person. A party for 12 children with a private room, Deluxe package, and three large pizzas, will cost you around $595.68 plus tax for a 2-hour event, around $50 per child.

13. Austin Zoo

Address: 10808 Rawhide Trail, Austin, TX 78736
Age Range Recommendation: between 3 and 9 years old

The Austin Zoo is a really unique option for a birthday party, and the best thing about the zoo is that it’s a non-profit zoo dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating exotic and native animals. The zoo spans 16 acres and is home to over 300 animals from more than 100 species. The zoo offers various designated party areas, ranging from shaded picnic areas with picnic tables and benches to indoor spaces with air conditioning to keep everyone cool during the hot Texas summers. All party areas can be decorated to fit the theme of your child’s celebration, ensuring a memorable and personalized experience. One of the highlights of hosting a birthday party at the Austin Zoo is the opportunity for children to get up close and personal with a wide array of animals. From lions and tigers to monkeys and parrots, the zoo provides an immersive and educational experience for children of all ages. Additionally, the zoo offers train rides, which my kids absolutely love and we always enjoy a ride around the park when we’re there. The train tickets are reasonable priced and the train runs every half hour.

Austin Zoo offers three birthday packages all of which include a 2 hour venue time slot, an animal experience presentation, 20 admission tickets, 20 goodie bags at a value of $5 each, and 10 animal feed bags.

– The Events Pavilion Package is priced at $625
– The Primate Pavilion Package is $550
– And the Peacock Barn Package is also $550

If you’re inviting more than 20 guests, you can purchase an additional ticket for $9.95 per person. Keep in mind that Austin Zoo does not provide decorations or food so you’ll have to provide your own decor and food. They do have a few charcoal grills which you can rent for $10, so that’s an option.

12. Kalahari

Address: 3001 Kalahari Blvd, Round Rock, TX 78665
Age Range Recommendation: 3+ years old

Kalahari is truly a hidden gem. If you don’t mind splurging on your child’s birthday party, Kalahari offers a fantastic experience for everyone. The indoor water park, complete with exhilarating water slides and a lazy river, along with the arcade and bowling alley, ensures there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Every time we visit Kalahari, my two boys are thoroughly entertained, making it feel like a mini staycation.

As a parent, safety is my top priority, especially with my adventurous 2-year-old. I was pleased to see that Kalahari is committed to ensuring guest safety. The well-trained lifeguards and attentive staff members made certain our party went smoothly. Additionally, the facility is kept impeccably clean, allowing me to feel comfortable knowing my children were playing in a sanitary environment.

The dining options at Kalahari also exceeded my expectations. The on-site restaurants cater to various dietary restrictions and preferences, making it a breeze to accommodate all our party guests. Kalahari’s dedication to customer service sets it apart from other venues in Austin. From the moment we arrived, the staff went the extra mile to make sure our party was seamless and stress-free. They were attentive, friendly, and genuinely invested in making our celebration memorable. The only downside to Kalahari are the lengthy wait times for their more popular water slides.

Kalahari offers multiple Birthday Packages. Their most affordable package, “Kenya’s Water Party,” starts at $750 and includes up to 10 guests, with 10 waterpark bands, a jumbo slice of pizza, and a soda for each guest. The “Kenya’s Cabana Party” package begins at $1,100 and covers up to 10 guests, providing 10 waterpark bands, a private sun deck cabana, and a jumbo slice of pizza with a soda for each guest. Lastly, the “Tom’s & Kenya’s BIG Adventure” package starts at $1,250 and accommodates up to 10 guests, offering waterpark admission, a jumbo slice of pizza, and unlimited access to most attractions.

Kalahari is a great choice for any child’s birthday party in Austin. With its variety of entertainment options, commitment to safety and cleanliness, and exceptional customer service, it’s an unforgettable venue that will leave your child and their friends talking about the event for a long time. Although wait times for popular attractions can be longer, the overall experience is well worth the investment. I highly recommend Kalahari for a one-of-a-kind birthday celebration that will create lasting memories for your child and their guests.

11. Pinballz Arcade

Address: 8940 Research Blvd, Austin, TX 78758
Age Range Recommendation: 12+ years old

Pinballz Arcade is another great choice for a kid’s birthday party. It’s a classic arcade experience with hundreds of retro and modern games that will keep kids entertained for hours. If your kids love to game, like mine do, this will be a fun birthday experience for them and their friends. The venue itself is spacious and has a fun and vibrant atmosphere that kids will love. The arcade is divided into different sections, each with its own unique selection of games. For example, there’s a section dedicated to classic arcade games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, as well as a section with newer games like Mario Kart and Dance Dance Revolution. Pinballz also has an impressive collection of pinball machines, which are always a hit with kids.

When it comes to booking a birthday party at Pinballz it’s important to book your party well in advance to ensure that you get the date and time slot that you want. Pinballz is a popular venue, especially for birthday parties, so it’s best to plan ahead. They have several packages to choose from but keep in mind that all packages include a private room 1.5 hours, and 2 slices of Pizza for each guest.

  • The “Game Start” package costs $15.99 per person/guest and includes a $10 game card per person, private room, 2 slices of Pizza and 1 drink per person.
  • Their “Power Play” package is $18.99 per person and includes a $12 game card per person, 1K tickets for the birthday boy/girl, 1.5 hour private room, 2 slices of pizza and a drink.
  • The “Level Up” package is $21.99 and includes a $15 game card for each guest and 1k tickets OR a Pinballz t-shirt for the guest of honor.
  • The “Super Star” package is $26.99 per person and includes a $20 game car for each guest, and 1k tickets or t-shirt, two slices of pizza per person, and one drink per person.
  • The “Bonus Round” package is $31.99 per person and includes a $25 game card and everything else that’s included in the “Super Star” package.
  • The “Final Boss” package is $34.99 per person includes a $30 game card.

Keep in mind that the minimum required number to reserve a party is 8 guests and all packages require a 50% nonrefundable deposit. They also provide a few extras like a kids goodie bag which costs $3.00 per bag and a corkage fee of $25 per hour which will allow you to bring your own wine or beer.

10. Sweet Eats Fruit Farm

Address: 14400 E State Hwy 29, Georgetown, TX 78626
Age Range Recommendation: between 4 and 7 years old

If you don’t mind the drive and your kids love spending time outdoors, then Sweet Eats Fruit Farm is a great place to have a birthday party. The farm just underwent a major upgrade and has considerably improved since we first visited a few years back. There is no shortage of fun activities to choose from.

The farm features a petting zoo, face painting, a tire pile with a slide, pig races, a hug jump pad, and obstacle course, a pedal cart race track, and our absolute favorite, APPLE CANNONS! They make booking a birthday party really easy and hassle free, all you have to do is purchase general admission tickets for your guests, or you can choose to have the guests purchase their own tickets. The nice thing about Sweet Eats Fruit Farm is that the birthday boy/girl get in for free. Keep in mind that if you have a large group, more than 45, you’ll have to contact the Farm directly to get their large group pricing. General admission price is $20 per guest.

For groups of 15 to 45 people they’ll require a $50 reservation fee which will allow you to reserve a picnic table, and keep in mind that the birthday boy/girl gets in free as well as children under 2. Also keep in mind that you only get the picnic table for a max of 2 hours.

9. Sandbox VR

Address: 3100 Esperanza Crossing Suite 100, Austin, TX 78758
Age Range Recommendation: 8+

If you’re looking to throw a birthday party with a “wow” factor, Sandbox VR is about as best as it gets. But it’s definitely a premium option, but if you’re after a shared, cinematic-style VR adventure where the whole group can enjoy together, this is the place to book.

My kids and I absolutely love this venue, and unlike other options in the Austin area we love that Sandbox offers full-body tracking and haptic vests to make it truly feel like you’re stepping into a video game or a sci-fi movie. The games are cooperative, fast, and genuinely fun, even for adults. It’s a great way to celebrate with a small group, especially for older kids, teens, or families who want something unique.

If possible, definately book on a weekday as it’s more affordable and less busy. The location at The Domain is super convenient for most families in North Austin, with easy parking and tons of restaurants, shops, and snack options nearby.

Do keep in mind that they don’t have a dedicated party room, and outside food is not allowed, but you can bring cupcakes. Most people just set up a small celebration in the lobby post-game with balloons and a treat table. It’s not a traditional party setup, but it works well if you keep it simple.

Some additional tips I can provide is to arrive at least 15 minutes early so kids have enough time to get suited up and review how the games work. Sessions run about 40 minutes with the actual games being 25 to 30 minutes long, so plan your party accordingly if you have parents picking up their kids.

8. Splash Shack

Address: 1801 Clover Ln, Cedar Park, TX 78613
Age Range Recommendation: between 5 and 7 years old

splash shack austin

If you’re looking for a fun, indoor birthday party spot designed specifically for younger kids, Splash Shack is a great option, especially on those scorching Austin afternoons. We recently attended a birthday here, and while the space is on the smaller side, it was very clean and perfect for the 4–6 year old crowd.

The park is essentially one large interactive water play structure packed inside a 10,000 sq ft building. There are several slides, sprayers, and a giant dump bucket that soaks everyone underneath. The setup is shallow, so you don’t have to worry about deep water—which adds a layer of peace of mind when you’ve got little ones running around. The space feels safe, and the staff we interacted with were friendly and attentive.

That said, it’s definitely not an all-day type of place. Two hours felt a little long for our crew, and some of the kids started to get bored toward the end. But for younger birthday groups, it’s a great place to burn some energy without worrying about the Texas heat.

You’re not allowed to bring outside food or drinks, but they do offer the option to order Domino’s pizza on the weekends, and their snack shack prices are surprisingly reasonable.

Here’s a breakdown of their birthday party packages:

PackagePriceDurationGuest IncludedExtras
Original Party Package$169.991 hour5 kids + 5 adultsJuice boxes, party host, goodie bucket for birthday kid
Pier Party Package$249.991 hour5 kids + 5 adultsUpstairs party space, juice boxes, party host, goodie bucket
Ultimate Surfer Package$319.982 hours10 kids + 10 adultsJuice boxes, party host, goodie bucket, Party Beach Area
2 Hour Pier Party Package$479.982 hours10 kids + 10 adultsUpstairs party space, juice boxes, party host, goodie bucket

Note: Each package includes “Unlimited Play” and can accommodate up to 30–50 total guests depending on the package.

A few things to keep in mind: no re-entry is allowed once you leave the building, and while it’s nice and warm inside, you’ll probably want to dress like it’s summer—otherwise, be prepared to sweat! Also, the chlorine smell was noticeably strong during our visit, which might be something to consider if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing.

All in all, Splash Shack is a charming, no-frills waterpark that’s ideal for younger birthday guests. If your kiddo is 5 or 6 and loves to splash, it’s definitely worth checking out.

7. Bouldering Project

Address: 4477 S Lamar Blvd Suite 600 Austin, TX 78745
Age Range Recommendation: between 5 and 10 years old

Not too long ago, my kids and I accidentally stumbled upon this place after taking my eldest to a clinic across the street. Ever since that first visit, we’ve returned to Bouldering Project on numerous occasions. This bouldering gym is really fun and clean. If your kids love climbing and being adventurous, then this might be a great place to celebrate your next birthday party. They have a designated corner of the gym specifically for children, with easy-to-navigate bouldering walls and picnic tables. I would recommend booking well in advance because they tend to book out fast. Note that they only allow birthday celebrations on Saturdays and Sundays, and at three specific designated times: 10 am to 12 pm, 1 pm to 3 pm, or 4 pm to 6 pm. You can’t book anything outside of those times and day slots. The birthday parties include climbing instruction and challenge games led by one of their staff. The maximum capacity for a party is 20 climbers, and the minimum age range is 5 to 10. They offer three packages to choose from:

Pebble Party: Includes a reservation of the party room with free climbing.

  • Cost: $250
  • 2-hour room reservation
  • Maximum of 10 climbers
  • Includes rental climbing shoes

6. Thinkery

Address: 1830 Simond Ave, Austin, TX 78723
Age Range Recommendation: between 3 and 7 years old

Thinkery Austin
Thinkery

If you’re searching for a memorable, fun, and educational birthday experience, then Thinkery might be the perfect choice. We hold an annual membership to Thinkery and enjoy visiting whenever we have a free weekend. We have also attended a few birthday parties at Thinkery, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Thinkery features several installations that explore various aspects of learning, ranging from the physics of motion to light and sound. The second floor is excellent for toddlers as it showcases a splash area, a playpen, and a reading area, also known as the “Story Nook.” The upstairs farmers market is another favorite of ours, providing an opportunity for us to rest our legs while the kids play.

Thinkery offers an Indoor birthday package for $300, which includes a private “Kitchen Lab” party room for 60 minutes, unlimited same-day admission to the museum for 30 people, and dedicated support staff to assist with setup and cleanup. The private room can accommodate up to 30 people. However, the package does not include food or drinks.

They also offer an Outdoor birthday package which accommodates up to 50 people and includes 2 hours in their private outdoor party space, and a dedicated party support staff. This package costs $500.

5. HCI Sports & Fitness

Address: 13875 Bee Cave Pkwy, Bee Cave, TX 78738
Age Range Recommendation: between 5 and 13 years old

Hill Country Indoors is a 140,000 square-foot indoor family sports and fitness center that opened its doors in 2017. HCI offers everything you might expect from a family sports facility, including personal training, group classes, youth programs, and dedicated spaces for private events and parties. The children’s center features several massive climbing walls and an expansive playscape. Additionally, the sports center hosts Vivel Crepes & Coffee, which my kids absolutely love—especially the classic sweet crepe with Nutella, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream.

My kids and I have attended several birthday parties at the HCI sports center, and they never disappoint. The kids have a blast climbing and using the playscape arena. Their birthday party packages include a party coach, a private party room, a birthday t-shirt for the birthday child, plates, napkins, forks, and a cake knife. They offer two packages: one for children ages 5+ that provides access to the climbing area and playscape, and another for children ages 7+ that includes a game of archery tag and access to their sports facilities for playing basketball, volleyball, soccer, football, kickball, dodgeball, capture the flag, or pickleball.

Also, keep in mind that there are two sets of pricing for each package, one for members and another for non-members.

Age Range Recommendation: between 6 and 16 years old

monster mini golf round rock

I am delighted to add a brand new entry, Monster Mini Golf, to my list of top birthday venues. If you don’t mind the drive, Monster Mini Golf stands as an excellent choice for your upcoming birthday celebration. This venue boasts an indoor mini golf course that glows in the dark, providing a fun and entertaining experience. The course is not overly challenging, and my 7-year-old always has a great time, particularly enjoying hole #5. Besides mini golf, the venue offers a thrilling laser tag course, a laser maze, and arcade games. The laser maze is a perennial favorite with my kids as they enjoy challenging themselves to dodge and crawl through like spies. The pricing is quite reasonable: mini golf costs $12.50 per person, a single game of laser tag is $7.00 per person, and the laser maze is priced at $3.50 per game.

Monster Mini Golf offers two birthday packages for selection. The first package caters to mini golf enthusiasts exclusively, while the second is a combo package that caters to the laser tag enthusiasts. Below is a pricing breakdown for each package.

2. Austin’s

Address: 16231 N Interstate Hwy 35, Pflugerville, TX 78660
Age Range Recommendation: between 5 and 16 years old

austin's amusement park

Austin’s is one of those rare places where you can entertain a group of five-year-olds and keep the teenagers happy at the same time. With everything from go-karts and laser tag to bowling, mini golf, bumper boats, and an indoor roller coaster, there’s truly something for everyone. It’s an all-in-one party destination that lets you spend the whole day playing, inside or out.

We’ve visited Austin’s a couple of times, and each time we walked away tired but happy. The place is clean, massive, and full of energy. The arcade is huge, the rides are fun, and their birthday party packages are super easy to book. There’s also a full-service bar and restaurant called REVL that gives adults a nice spot to hang out while the kids burn through your play cards :).

That said, you’ll want to come prepared for crowds. Lines for the more popular attractions (like go-karts and bowling) can get long during weekends or holidays, so I recommend arriving early in the day if you can. While the buffet isn’t gourmet, it gets the job done, with lots of pizza options and a salad bar.

Here’s a look at their most popular birthday party packages:

PackagePriceWhat’s Included
Mega Blast$399.95Private room (90 min), party host, 3 pizzas, unlimited soft drinks (in room), all-day unlimited attractions, $10 Fun Card per guest, $15 Fun Card + 500 pts for birthday kid. Up to 10 guests.
Extreme$459.95Reserved table (90 min), unlimited buffet + drinks until 7pm, all-day unlimited attractions, $10 Fun Card per guest, $15 Fun Card + 500 pts for birthday kid. Up to 10 guests.
Night Owls$429.95Available after 7pm. Private table, 3 pizzas, 4 pitchers of drinks, all-day unlimited attractions, one game of bowling or Putt Vegas per guest, $10 Fun Card per guest, $15 Fun Card + 500 pts for birthday kid. Up to 10 guests.

Each additional guest ranges from $39.95 to $45.95 depending on the package.

They also offer fun add-ons like goodie bags, pizza, taco platters, charcuterie boards, and even a Mediterranean platter. Just keep in mind: no outside food is allowed except for birthday cake, and you’ll need to book at least 72 hours in advance.

Overall, Austin’s is a fantastic venue if you’re looking for a one-stop-shop birthday extravaganza. It’s a bit on the pricier side, and the crowds can be a drawback, but the sheer number of attractions more than makes up for it. If you’ve got a big group with a mix of ages, this place will absolutely deliver.

1. Dart’em Up

Address: 13776 US-183 Hwy Ste. #104, Austin, TX 78750
Age Range Recommendation: between 7 and 13 years old

I’m more than happy to give Dart’em the number one spot on my list of top birthday venues for kids in the Austin area. Dart’em Up is an excellen choice for a unique and unforgettable birthday party. We’ve had several birthday parties at this venue and the kids constantly ask when we can go back. As a venue dedicated solely to Nerf gun battles, Dart’em Up provides a fun and exciting environment for kids to play and have a blast with their friends. They make the entire experience easy on the parents and the owner is a top notch operator.

The venue itself is spacious and well-designed, with multiple themed arenas that provide different play experiences. For example, there’s a medieval castle arena, a space-themed arena, and a post-apocalyptic wasteland arena. Each arena has its own obstacles, barriers, and targets, which adds to the excitement and challenge of the games.

Dart’em Up has two packages to choose from.

  • The Blaster Party package is $400 and includes up to 10 guests. It costs $24.95 for each additional guest. The packages include a 2 hour Dart’em Up tag experience, 45 minutes in a private room, 3 large pizzas, 3 two liter soft drinks, and access to a few arcade games with $12 cards for each guest.

What to Expect When Booking with Backyard Starz

What to Expect When Booking with Backyard Starz

Booking an outdoor movie night should feel exciting, not confusing. When you book with Backyard Starz, you’ll know exactly what happens next — how the date gets reserved, what needs to be ready before we arrive, how setup works, and what to expect if weather becomes a factor. A signed agreement and deposit secure the date, and from there the goal is to make the process feel clear, simple, and easy to follow.

For us, that clarity is part of good customer service. When you book with us, you’ll never have to guess about the basics, especially when you’re already planning a party, school event, HOA movie night, or family gathering. We spell out the important details ahead of time — things like power, setup space, timing, and what is included — so by the time event day arrives, you’ll feel prepared and excited instead of stressed. The agreement, setup instructions, and our internal event-day process all work toward the same goal: making the experience straightforward from the start.

This pos is here to walk you through the process in plain English. If you are wondering what happens after you book, this is exactly where to start.

Reserving Your Date

The first step is simple. To reserve your date, we require two things: a signed agreement and a deposit. For most bookings, the deposit is 20%, and for our Family/Drop-off Package, the deposit is 50%. Once we have both, your date is secured. Until then, we cannot promise that the date will stay available, so we always encourage people to lock it in as soon as they know.

We are very clear about that upfront because we never want anyone to assume they are booked when they are not. We would much rather make the process feel straightforward from the beginning. You know what is needed to hold the date, you know what comes next, and you do not have to wonder whether your event is on the calendar yet.

The other thing we keep simple is payment. The remaining balance is due on the day of the event after setup is complete. To me, that feels fair and easy to understand. You secure the date with the deposit, and then once everything is in place on event day, we wrap up the rest.

Once your date is reserved, the next step is choosing the package that fits your event best.

Choosing the Right Package

Once your date is reserved, the next step is choosing the package that fits your event best. For me, this is not just about picking a screen size. It is really about figuring out what kind of experience you want and how hands-on you want to be as the host.

Some people want the easiest possible option where we come out, set everything up, make sure it looks great, and come back for takedown so you can focus on your guests and enjoy the event. That is exactly what our setup-and-takedown option is for.

Other people want a more budget-friendly option and are comfortable being a little more involved. That is where our DIY/Drop-off package can make a lot of sense. It still gives you access to the Backyard Starz experience, but in a way that works better for families or hosts who want to save money and do more of the setup themselves. And even with our DIY package, you get that white-glove, customer obsessed experience that’s become such a staple of who we are. We include detailed setup instructions with your DIY setup with all the equipment labeled according to the setup instructions. And in case you’re having trouble placing, locating, or setting up, we always make ourselves available to help you troubleshoot.

Once you have the right package picked out, the next question is what needs to be ready before we arrive.

Before We Arrive

Once your package is picked out, your event day goes much more smoothly when the setup area is ready before we arrive. That does not mean you need to do anything complicated. It mostly means choosing a clear, open space for the screen and seating, and making sure the area is free of anything that could get in the way of setup. If you’re unsure if you’re area or backyard will work with our setup or if you think you’re backyard is too small, you need not worry, we’ve worked in all sort of backyards and made the setup happen and we always discuss and review these details a week prior to your event to iron out the details.

We also work with all types of surfaces. Grass is the easiest, but if your event is on turf, concrete, or another non-grass surface, don’t worry we have weighted items to secure the screen properly.

Once the setup area is ready, the next thing that matters is power, media, and a few practical details that help the movie start smoothly.

Setup Details That Help the Night Go Smoothly

This is the part that sounds technical at first, but it is actually pretty simple once you know what matters. The biggest thing is power. We need one working outlet within 50 feet of where the screen will go, and ideally that outlet is not sharing a circuit with a bunch of other things at the same time.

The other piece people ask about a lot is the movie itself. We provide the equipment that is included in the package — things like the screen, projector, speaker, and DVD player — but we do not provide the entertainment or media itself. That means customers need to have their movie or content ready, whether that is a DVD or their own streaming device or laptop. We also do not provide public performance licenses, so if someone is planning a public viewing, that piece needs to be handled on their end.

If you are using your own laptop or streaming device, we can still help the night start smoothly. Our setup process includes connecting the client’s device, checking the sound, and playing the movie for five to ten minutes ahead of time if someone is streaming, just to make sure there are no connection issues. We also show the client how to control the volume and make sure they feel comfortable before we wrap up the setup.

I also like to be honest about what tends to work best. For the most reliable experience, I recommend using a DVD or another directly compatible media source whenever possible. Streaming can absolutely work, but it naturally introduces a few more variables. My goal is always to help people understand those little details ahead of time so the movie night feels easy and smooth once everyone is ready to sit down.

Once power and media are sorted out, the next thing people usually want to know is what event day actually looks like from setup to movie time.

What Event Day Actually Looks Like

By the time event day arrives, our goal is for everything to feel very seamless. For setup-and-takedown events, we start setup two hours before sunset, and the standard three-hour rental time begins at sunset. That gives us enough time to get everything in place before guests settle in, and it gives you a clear sense of how the evening will flow. If you need an earlier setup or want to keep the equipment longer, we can acomodate that for an additional fee.

When we arrive, we first check in with you and confirm the best place to set up the screen. We look at the space, the light, and any possible obstructions so the setup works as well as it can. From there, we unload everything, inflate the screen, set up the projector and speaker, inflate the chairs, place the side tables, and make sure the area looks tidy and feels ready for guests.

If you are using a laptop or another streaming device, we do not just plug it in and walk away. We play the movie for a few minutes ahead of time to make sure there are no connection issues, and we also show you how to adjust the volume before we finish setup. If you are using a DVD, we make sure you know how to pause and play it as well. I think those little walkthroughs matter because they help the night feel smooth once people are actually sitting down to watch.

Once everything is set up, we let you know the space is ready, and we make sure you know how takedown will work. We return at the pre-arranged time, but we can also give you a number to text if you are ready a little earlier or need to coordinate a different takedown time. I like that part of the process to feel flexible and easy too.

That is really what event day feels like with Backyard Starz: organized, clear, and easy to enjoy.

The other big question people always have is what happens if the weather changes.

This is one of the biggest questions people have, and I completely understand why. Outdoor movie nights should feel fun and low-stress, so when the forecast starts looking questionable, the last thing we want is for you to feel confused about what happens next.

We keep that part straightforward. If your event turns into a true rain-out, we either reschedule for an available date or return your deposit. Rain-out calls are made within 12 hours of the scheduled event, and if the cancellation happens at least 12 hours before the event because of weather, we will fully refund the deposit or move the event to the next available date.

If you have a covered alternative space that works, we can set up there instead. And if conditions are unsafe for clients, guests, or the equipment — like rain, high winds, or other hazardous weather — Backyard Starz reserves the right to cancel or reschedule the event.

Along with weather, there are also a few simple event-day rules that help protect the equipment and keep the whole setup running smoothly.

Our goal is to make everything to feel easy and relaxed. A big part of that is making sure there are a few simple rules in place that protect the equipment, protect your guests, and help the whole setup run the way it is supposed to.

The biggest things are pretty straightforward. We ask customers not to allow cooking, fire, smoking, or any combustible material under or within ten feet of the inflatable screen and chairs. We also ask that no one jump on the inflatable seating, and that the equipment not be used on rough or jagged surfaces like rocks, brick, glass, or anything else that could puncture it. Those rules are there for a reason. They help keep people safe, and they help make sure the event stays fun instead of turning into an avoidable problem.

There are also a few practical things that make a real difference. We ask customers to turn sprinklers off before the event, keep the area clear, and avoid repeatedly plugging or unplugging the motor. On our setup side, we are careful to keep cables tidy, place them out of the main walking paths when possible, and leave the site clean after takedown. Those details may seem small, but they go a long way in making the event feel more organized and less stressful.

For drop-off and self-setup rentals, there are a few extra responsibilities too. The equipment needs to be stored in a protective area and kept out of the elements, and it needs to be ready for pickup at the agreed time. If our team has to package everything up because it is not ready, there is an additional fee. I like being clear about that ahead of time because it helps avoid confusion later.

Final Payment, Cancellations, and Delivery Details

The last piece I always want people to understand is the simple practical stuff: when the final payment is due, what happens if plans change, and how delivery works. I never want those details to feel hidden or confusing. Once your date is reserved, the remaining balance is due on the day of your event after setup is complete. And if a balance goes unpaid, there is a $50 late fee for each day beyond the first 48 hours after the event. To me, that is just part of keeping the process clear and fair for everyone.

I also like to be straightforward about cancellations. If you need to cancel 21 business days or more before your event, you receive a full refund of your deposit. If the cancellation happens less than 21 business days before the event, that may result in the loss of your deposit. I think it is much better for people to know that ahead of time instead of finding out later when they are already stressed.

Delivery is simple too. Delivery is included within a 10-mile radius of 78732, and outside of that area the delivery fee is based on mileage.

For me, this all comes back to the same idea: people should know what to expect from the start. When the payment timing, cancellation window, and delivery details are all clear upfront, the whole booking experience feels easier and a lot more comfortable.

If you want an outdoor movie night that feels clear, easy, and well organized from the moment you book it, we’d love to help you plan it. That has always been one of the biggest goals behind Backyard Starz — not just creating a fun event, but making the whole process feel simple and manageable for the people hosting it.

From reserving your date to setup, timing, weather questions, and takedown, we want you to feel like you know exactly what to expect. When people book Backyard Starz, we want them to feel excited about the night ahead, not stressed about how all the pieces are going to come together.

If that sounds like the kind of outdoor movie experience you’re looking for, we’d love to help you choose the right package and get your date on the calendar.

Why Families in Austin Choose Backyard Starz for Outdoor Movie Parties

  • outdoor movie birthday party with gray chairs
  • backyard starz movies by the pool

When families book Backyard Starz, they’re usually not just looking for a movie screen. They’re looking for something that feels special for their kids, easy for the adults, and actually worth the effort of hosting. That’s a big part of why we built this business the way we did.

As a mom, I know family events are never just about the equipment. They’re about whether the setup feels inviting, whether the kids get excited the second they see it, whether the parents can actually relax a little, and whether the whole night feels like a memory instead of one more thing to manage. That’s exactly where Backyard Starz shines.

To me, that’s why so many families in Austin choose us. We make outdoor movie nights feel warm, comfortable, and thoughtfully put together from the start — not just fun for the kids, but genuinely enjoyable for everyone.

W built Backyard Starz with families in mind because that’s the kind of event we understand best. We know what it feels like to want to create something fun and memorable for your kids, while also knowing that as the parent, you’re the one thinking about the logistics, the timing, the guest list, the food, and everything else behind the scenes.

That’s a big reason why I’ve always wanted Backyard Starz to feel different from a basic rental company. I’m not just thinking about the screen. I’m thinking about what it feels like when guests arrive, whether the setup feels welcoming, whether the kids get excited right away, and whether the adults feel like they can actually enjoy the night too.

For families, those little things matter. Comfort matters. Simplicity matters. Having options matters. Being able to choose a setup that fits your budget and your level of involvement matters. We built Backyard Starz around those things because we know that family events are not just about entertainment — they’re about creating a moment that feels special without making the whole day harder on the people hosting it.

That’s really the heart of it for me. We wanted to create something that helps families celebrate in a way that feels easy, thoughtful, and genuinely memorable. Not overcomplicated. Not impersonal. Just a really fun night that feels well put together from the start.

That’s really the heart of it for me. I wanted to create something that helps families celebrate in a way that feels easy, thoughtful, and genuinely memorable. Not overcomplicated. Not impersonal. Just a really fun night that feels well put together from the start.

That family-first mindset shapes everything we do — especially the way we make the whole event feel easier for the people hosting it.

We Make Family Events Feel Easier

One of the biggest reasons families choose Backyard Starz is because we make the whole event feel easier. And honestly, I think that matters just as much as the movie itself.

When you’re planning something for kids, you’re already managing enough. You’re thinking about snacks, timing, guests, energy levels, cleanup, and all the little details that somehow always end up landing on the parents. The last thing you need is a rental company that makes the process more complicated. That’s why we’ve worked to make Backyard Starz feel simple and supportive from the very beginning.

We offer options because not every family wants the same kind of experience. Some people want the easiest possible version, where we handle the setup and takedown and they can just enjoy the night. Other families want to save a little money and go with DIY, but still want that option to feel convenient and manageable. Either way, the goal is the same: to help people host something special without turning it into a stressful project.

I also think family events go better when the setup feels ready for people to actually enjoy. When everything is in place, when the seating feels comfortable, and when the night has a clear plan, parents can relax more and kids can settle into the fun faster. That makes a huge difference.

To me, that is a big part of why Backyard Starz works so well for families. We do not just show up with equipment. We help make the event feel easier to host, easier to enjoy, and a lot less overwhelming than trying to piece everything together yourself.

That easier experience matters, but so does the way the event feels once it actually starts especially for kids and parents.

Our Setups Feel Better for Kids and Parents

For families, I really believe the setup itself matters more than people think. Kids notice it right away. They notice when something feels fun, different, and a little magical. And parents notice it too — especially when the space feels comfortable, welcoming, and easy to settle into. That has always been a big part of how we think about Backyard Starz. I do not just want to deliver equipment. We want to create an outdoor movie night that feels warm, polished, and special from the moment people walk out into your yard.

That is also why we care so much about comfort. A lot of outdoor movie companies focus almost entirely on the screen, but for us, what happens in front of the screen is just as important. If kids are excited to run over and find their seat, if parents feel like they can relax, and if the whole setup looks inviting instead of thrown together, the night starts off in a completely different way. Our inflatable lounge chairs are a huge part of that. They are one of the clearest things that sets Backyard Starz apart. That detail may sound small, but it changes the feel of the entire event.

Families appreciate when something feels a little elevated without becoming fussy or overcomplicated. That has always been important to us. That balance is part of our mission and values too — creating joyful, affordable experiences that bring people together. When the setup looks beautiful, feels comfortable, and is easy for people to enjoy, the whole event becomes more than just a movie outside. It becomes a family memory.

That comfort and flexibility matter even more because not every family wants the exact same kind of package or the same level of involvement.

Flexible Options

One thing I have learned is that families do not all want the same kind of event. Some people want the easiest possible setup where they do not have to think about a thing beyond picking the movie and sending the invites. Other families want to keep costs lower and do a little more themselves, but still want the experience to feel simple and worth it. That is exactly why we built Backyard Starz with flexible options instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

For some families, the full setup and takedown option is the clear winner. They want to enjoy the party, focus on their kids and guests, and not spend the evening dealing with equipment. For other families, the DIY option makes more sense because they want something more budget-friendly, but they still want the movie night to feel special. I think both are completely valid, and that’s why Backyard Starz works well for both kinds of hosts.

The same goes for group size and event type. Some families are planning a smaller backyard birthday party with close friends. Some are hosting a bigger family gathering, school event, or neighborhood movie night. The setup needs for those events are different, and that’s why we offer packages that can flex depending on what you actually need.

That flexibility matters because it makes Backyard Starz fit your needs. Not every family has the same budget. Not every event has the same guest count. Not every host wants the same level of involvement. I never wanted people to feel like they had to force their event into one rigid package just to make it work.

To me, that is part of what makes Backyard Starz such a good fit for families. We give people options, but the experience still feels thoughtful and elevated no matter which route you choose.

Experience, Not Just the Screen

At the end of the day, this is what you come to us for. You are not just booking a movie screen. You are booking a feeling. You want a night that feels fun for the kids, easy for the adults, and memorable enough that people are still talking about it afterward.

That is a big part of why we care so much about the full experience. Kids remember walking outside and seeing the big screen set up in the yard. They remember picking their spot, getting cozy, and feeling like something special is about to happen. Parents remember that the whole night felt easier than they expected and that it actually gave everyone a chance to relax and enjoy being together.

I also think outdoor movie nights have a different kind of energy than a lot of other party options. They feel slower in a good way. People settle in. They talk. They snack. They laugh. Kids get excited without the whole event having to be loud or overcomplicated. For families, that balance is really special because it feels like an event, but it still feels personal and comfortable at the same time.

That is what I always want Backyard Starz to create. Not just entertainment, but a memory. Something that feels a little magical for the kids and genuinely enjoyable for the adults too. When families choose Backyard Starz, they are choosing more than a movie night. They are choosing a kind of experience that feels warm, easy, and worth making room for.

Who Backyard Starz Is Especially Great For

Backyard Starz works well for a lot of different kinds of events, from HOA events, school fundraisers, corporate events, church events, and more, but there are definitely some situations where I think it is an especially great fit.

It is a really natural fit for birthday parties, especially for families who want something that feels special without having to rent a full venue. A backyard movie night gives the party a real centerpiece, but it still feels relaxed, personal, and easy to enjoy.

It is also a great fit for family movie nights and backyard celebrations where the goal is simply to bring people together. Sometimes the best events are the ones that feel a little more low-pressure. You have good food, people you love, a cozy setup, and one big fun thing for everyone to gather around. That is where outdoor movie nights really shine.

Backyard Starz is also a strong choice for neighborhood gatherings, HOA events, school movie nights, and church family events. Those kinds of events need something that feels welcoming, easy to understand, and fun for a wide range of ages. A movie night does that beautifully. People do not need instructions. They do not need to be convinced to participate. They can just show up, settle in, and enjoy the evening together.

And then there are the families who simply want something that feels a little more elevated than a basic backyard party, but still realistic in terms of budget and effort. That is a huge part of who Backyard Starz is for. If you want the night to look good, feel comfortable, and create a memory people will actually talk about afterward, this is exactly the kind of event we are built for.

To me, Backyard Starz is best for families who care about how the whole night feels. Not just the movie, not just the screen, but the experience of gathering together in a way that feels easy, warm, and genuinely special.

FAQs

Why is Backyard Starz such a good fit for families with kids?

Because family events need more than just equipment. They need to feel easy, comfortable, and worth the effort of hosting. We built Backyard Starz with that in mind. The setup feels exciting for kids, relaxing for parents, and simple enough that the whole night feels enjoyable instead of stressful.

Is Backyard Starz a good option for kids’ birthday parties?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, birthday parties are one of the best fits for Backyard Starz. A backyard movie night gives the party a real main-event feeling, but it still feels personal and relaxed. It is a great option for families who want something memorable without renting a full venue or planning a huge production.

What ages are Backyard Starz movie nights best for?

It can work for a wide range of ages, but it is especially great for families with younger kids, older kids, tweens, and mixed-age groups. One of the nice things about an outdoor movie night is that it is easy for everyone to understand and enjoy. It feels special without needing a complicated activity plan.

Do kids actually enjoy outdoor movie nights?

Yes, kids get excited the second they see the big screen, the lounge chairs, and the whole backyard theater setup. It feels different from just watching something inside, and that is a big part of what makes it memorable.

What makes Backyard Starz better for families than just doing it myself?

For most families, the biggest difference is that we make the experience feel easier and more complete. You are not just trying to piece together a projector, speakers, seating, and setup plan on your own. We bring a full experience that feels polished, comfortable, and actually ready for guests to enjoy.

Is Backyard Starz only for big events?

Not at all. Backyard Starz works really well for birthday parties and neighborhood events, but it is also great for smaller family gatherings and backyard celebrations. Some of the best movie nights are the ones that feel a little more intimate and low-pressure.

What if I want something easy and hands-off?

That is exactly why we offer setup and takedown. If you want the easiest version possible, we can handle the setup so you can focus on your guests, your kids, and actually enjoying the event.

Is the DIY option still a good fit for families?

Yes, especially for families who want to save money but still want the event to feel special. Our DIY option is meant to be the more budget-friendly route without making the whole night feel like a giant hassle. It gives families flexibility while still keeping the experience convenient.

What makes your setup feel more comfortable than other options?

A big part of it is the seating. Our inflatable lounge chairs make a huge difference in how the whole event feels. They make the setup look more polished, feel more inviting, and create a more relaxed atmosphere for both kids and adults.

Is Backyard Starz a good fit for family-friendly neighborhood or school events too?

Yes, definitely. Backyard Starz works really well for HOA events, school movie nights, church gatherings, and other family-friendly community events because the format is simple, welcoming, and fun for a wide range of ages.

What if I’m not sure which package is best for my family or event?

That is completely normal, and we’re happy to help. Some families want the easiest full-service option, and some want a more budget-friendly DIY route. It really depends on the size of the event, your budget, and how hands-on you want to be.

What Makes Backyard Starz Different From Other Outdoor Movie Rental Companies in Austin

Not all outdoor movie rental companies in Austin are the same. On paper, a lot of them can bring a screen and projector to your event. But from my perspective, the real difference is everything around that for example how easy the booking process feels, what is actually included, how comfortable your guests are, and whether the whole night feels thoughtfully put together from start to finish.

When I started Backyard Starz, I wanted to create something that felt both special and easy. I’m a mom, so I know firsthand that when you’re planning a party or neighborhood event, you’re not just renting equipment you’re trying to create a memory without creating a bunch of extra stress for yourself. That’s why I built Backyard Starz around the things I think matter most: warm, responsive customer service, a setup that feels polished and inviting, flexible package options, and little touches like our inflatable lounge chairs that make the night feel more comfortable and more memorable.

To me, that’s the difference. Backyard Starz is not just about showing a movie outside. It’s about helping people gather, relax, and enjoy a night that actually feels worth hosting.

We’re Local, Family-Run, and Hands-On

One thing I think really matters, and honestly gets overlooked a lot, is who you’re actually booking with. Backyard Starz is not some giant franchise or faceless rental warehouse. This company is very personal to me. I built it because I love the idea of bringing people together outdoors in a way that feels fun, easy, and memorable.

As a mom, I know what it feels like to plan something special and also worry about all the little things that could go wrong. That’s why I’ve always wanted Backyard Starz to feel different from the very first conversation. I want people to feel like they’re working with someone who genuinely cares about their event, not someone just checking a booking off a list.

For me, being local and family-run shows up in the details. It shows up in how quickly we respond, how much we care about making things easy, and how seriously we take customer service. It shows up in the way we think through the guest experience, not just the equipment. And it shows up in the pride we take in making sure the whole setup feels polished, welcoming, and worth talking about afterward.

There are other companies that can bring a screen to your house. But what I’ve tried to build with Backyard Starz is something more thoughtful than that. I want the process to feel personal, the event to feel elevated, and the whole experience to feel like something you’re genuinely excited you booked.

That personal approach is a big part of the difference but so is what you actually get when you book with us

Our Packages Include More Than Just a Screen

One of the biggest differences, in my opinion, is that when you book Backyard Starz, you’re not just renting a screen and hoping the rest of the night comes together on its own. I’ve always wanted our setups to feel like a real outdoor theater experience, not just a piece of equipment dropped off in your yard. That’s why our packages are built around the full experience — the inflatable screen, projector, sound, lounge chairs, side tables, and the little details that make the whole night feel comfortable and put together.

I also think comfort matters a lot more than people realize. Guests remember how the night felt. They remember whether it was cozy, whether the setup looked inviting, and whether it actually felt special. That’s a big reason I love our inflatable lounge chairs so much. They really do change the whole vibe of the event. They make it feel more polished, more welcoming, and more memorable than a basic “screen in the backyard” setup.

We’ve also tried to make our packages feel generous, not bare-bones. We offer longer movie time, package options for different group sizes, and setups that can work for everything from a smaller family gathering to a bigger party or neighborhood event. That matters when you’re planning a real event and not just a quick rental. I want people to feel like they’re getting something complete and thoughtfully designed, whether they choose a more hands-on option or want us to take care of everything.

And that’s really the heart of it for me. I don’t just want to provide equipment. I want to provide a movie night that already feels halfway done the moment we arrive — one that feels easy to host, comfortable for guests, and genuinely special from the start.

That fuller package experience is a big part of what makes us different and even our DIY option is designed to be easier than what most people expect.

Even Our DIY Option Is Designed to Be Easier

I also think this is one of the most overlooked differences between Backyard Starz and a lot of other outdoor movie rental companies: even our DIY option is designed to make your life easier.

A lot of people hear “DIY” and assume it just means “cheaper.” But in real life, DIY can also mean a whole lot more work than you expected. It can mean driving across town, loading equipment into your car, figuring out how to fit everything, bringing it home, setting it up yourself, and then doing the whole thing again in reverse when the night is over. In my opinion, that stops feeling fun very quickly — especially if you’re already juggling kids, food, guests, and all the little details that come with hosting.

That’s exactly why I wanted our DIY option to feel different. I still wanted it to be the more budget-friendly choice, but I did not want it to feel like a burden. With some companies, DIY means you have to pick everything up yourself, haul it home, and return it later. Our version is much simpler. We bring the equipment to you and pick it up from you, so you still save money without turning the whole experience into a logistical project.

For a lot of families, that middle ground is exactly what they want. Maybe you do not need full setup and takedown, but you also do not want to spend half your day driving to a warehouse, loading gear, and worrying about returning everything on time. Our DIY option gives people more flexibility and better value, while still keeping the experience convenient.

That has always been our goal with Backyard Starz. Whether someone books our full-service package or our DIY option, we want it to feel easy, thoughtful, and worth it. DIY should still feel like help.

That easier DIY experience is one part of the value story, but it also matters what you’re actually getting for the price.

We Believe in Straightforward Value

We’ve spent a lot of time looking at what other outdoor movie rental companies in Austin charge, what they include, and where the little extras start adding up. And one thing I keep coming back to is this: the lowest number on the page does not always mean the best value.

For us, value is about the full picture. It’s about what’s actually included, how easy the process feels, how much work gets pushed back onto you, and whether the setup feels special when everything is finally in place. I’d rather offer something that feels complete and worth it than strip everything down just to look cheaper at first glance.

That’s especially true when you start comparing what comes with the rental. A screen by itself is one thing. A full setup that includes comfortable seating, sound, thoughtful presentation, flexible package options, and real customer support is something else entirely. We want people to feel like they’re getting more than equipment — they’re getting an experience that already feels elevated before the movie even starts.

I’m also very aware that families, schools, HOAs, and neighborhood hosts are all trying to stay mindful of budget. I respect that completely. That’s why I think it matters to offer options. Some people want the easiest possible full-service setup. Some people want to save money and choose DIY, but still want the process to feel convenient. We’ve tried to build Backyard Starz in a way that gives people both.

So when we talk about value, we’re not talking about being the cheapest company in town at any cost. We’re talking about being the company that gives you the best overall experience for what you spend — with fewer hassles, more included, and a setup that actually feels worth inviting people over for.

And for me, good value also means less stress when plans shift or questions come up — especially with outdoor events.

We Make Outdoor Events Feel Less Stressful

Another thing that makes Backyard Starz different is that we make the process straightforward before event day even arrives. When people are planning a party, they already have enough to think about. The movie setup should not feel confusing, vague, or full of last-minute surprises.

From the beginning, we make the booking process clear. To hold a date, we require a deposit and a signed agreement, and the remaining balance is due on the day of the event after setup is complete. That kind of clarity matters because people deserve to know exactly what to expect instead of guessing their way through the process.

We are also upfront about the practical details that can make or break an outdoor event. We let customers know ahead of time that the setup area needs to be cleared, that the screen needs access to power, and that outdoor movie nights work best after dark. For setup-and-takedown events, we arrive before sunset so everything is ready to go on time, and if someone needs an earlier setup or extra time, we offer those options too.

Weather is another big one, and we keep that simple too. If an event is rained out, we reschedule for an available date or return the deposit. If there is a covered alternative space that works, we can use that as well. Being clear about those policies ahead of time helps people feel much more comfortable booking.

The same goes for delivery and setup expectations. We are upfront about our delivery radius, extra mileage outside that range, power-distance limits, and what is needed for surfaces like turf or concrete. We would much rather talk through those details early than have someone feel caught off guard later.

That is a big part of what customer service means to us. We do not just want to deliver a great movie night. We make the entire experience feel easy to understand, easy to book, and easy to feel good about from the start.

And once the logistics are clear, one of the biggest things that changes how the whole event feels is the part most people do not think about right away: the seating.

Our Inflatable Lounge Chairs Change the Whole Feel of the Night

One of the things people notice right away about Backyard Starz is the seating. And honestly, I love that, because I think it says a lot about how I think about the whole experience.

A lot of outdoor movie setups focus almost entirely on the screen, and of course the screen matters. But to me, the part that really changes the feeling of the night is what happens in front of it. If guests are uncomfortable, standing around, or dragging out random folding chairs from the garage, the event feels a lot less special no matter how nice the screen is.

That is exactly why our inflatable lounge chairs are such a big part of what makes Backyard Starz different. They make the setup feel more polished, more inviting, and a lot more intentional. Instead of looking like equipment dropped into a yard, it starts to feel like a real outdoor movie night — the kind of setup people get excited to walk into.

I also love them because they work for so many different kinds of events. For kids, they feel fun and different. For families, they make the whole space feel cozy and relaxed. And for neighborhood events or bigger gatherings, they help create a setup that looks much more put together in photos and in person.

To me, that is the bigger point. I do not just want people to rent a movie screen. I want them to feel like they are hosting something memorable. The lounge chairs help create that feeling right away, and they are one of the clearest examples of how Backyard Starz is built around the full experience, not just the equipment.

Who Backyard Starz Is Best For

We are a great fit for families who want a birthday party to feel special without having to rent a full venue. A backyard movie night gives you that “main event” feeling, but it still feels personal and relaxed. It works especially well for parents who want something memorable without turning the whole day into a giant production.

We are also a really strong fit for HOA events, neighborhood gatherings, and community nights. Those events need something that feels polished, easy to enjoy, and simple for people to gather around. An outdoor movie night does that naturally. It gives everyone a reason to show up, settle in, and enjoy the evening together.

Backyard Starz is also a great option for schools, churches, and family-friendly organizations that want an event people will actually be excited about. Movie nights work because they feel inclusive. You do not have to explain the activity, and you do not have to convince people to participate. People just get it right away.

And honestly, we are also a really good fit for people who want something that feels a little more premium than a basic rental setup, but still does not cost what a full event venue would cost. That is one of the biggest reasons I built Backyard Starz the way I did. I wanted it to feel elevated and memorable, but still realistic for real families and real community events.

How much does it cost to rent a movie theater in Austin? (I got the scoop)

When my oldest turned 10, he didn’t want a bounce house. He didn’t want bowling. He wanted to rent a movie theater for a birthday party.

At first, I thought: “Okay! Sounds fun, let’s do it.” But five tabs, three pricing forms, and one very confusing phone call later… I realized this was not going to be as simple as I hoped.

That’s when I started digging. I looked into every major theater in Austin (and a few just outside of town), asked questions, compared prices, and eventually booked a private movie theater party that my son still talks about.

So if you’re thinking about renting a movie theater for your kid’s birthday — and you’re trying to figure out which places actually offer it, how much it costs, what’s included, and what to expect — I’ve got you.

This guide is a breakdown of every major movie theater in the Austin area that offers birthday rentals, from luxury venues with recliners and dine-in service to more budget-friendly chains where you can book a watch party without spending thousands.

And at the end, I’ll also share the setup we offer through Backyard Starz, in case you’re open to something a little different — and a lot more affordable — that still feels like a private theater experience.

Let’s dive in.

1. IPIC Theaters (The Domain)

CategoryDetails
Location3225 Amy Donovan Plaza, Austin, TX 78758
Seats36 (smallest theater)
Rental Fee$736.56
Food & Beverage Minimum$1,080 (plus tax + gratuity)
Outside Cake?Yes, with service fee and advance notice
Party Room? No; celebrations take place inside theater
ParkingFree garage (Orange Garage) + surface lot

If you’re planning a birthday party and want something upscale, IPIC at The Domain is one of the most polished private movie theater options in Austin. It’s a full dine-in experience — plush recliners, in-seat food and drink service, and a menu that leans more “date night” than “kids’ menu.” It’s definitely a splurge, but it can be a great fit if you’re looking for a more elevated party setup and don’t want to worry about wrangling pizza and paper plates.

When I contacted their events manager to ask about booking a private screening for 18 guests, here’s what they offered:

  • $736.56 to rent their smallest auditorium (36 seats)
  • $1,080 food & beverage minimum, plus tax and gratuity

That brings your estimated total to around $2,200–$2,400, depending on what you order and how many guests attend. The auditorium is fully private, and you can choose the movie — though availability will depend on the title (especially if you’re hoping to screen a new release).

What’s Included

A private screening at IPIC includes:

  • Exclusive use of a 36-seat theater
  • Your movie of choice (confirm title when booking — not all are available)
  • Full food and beverage service to each seat (menu includes burgers, flatbreads, salads, cocktails, desserts, and kids’ options)
  • Complimentary pillows and blankets at every recliner
  • Dedicated event coordination leading up to the party
Cake Policy

IPIC does allow outside birthday cake or cupcakes for private events, but they do not allow outside food beyond that. If you’re bringing a cake, you’ll need to coordinate with the events team in advance. For safety and service reasons, their staff will handle cutting and serving, and a small cake service fee may apply depending on the group size and setup.

Since there’s no separate party room, all celebration happens inside the theater. You’ll typically get access before the movie starts to sing Happy Birthday, serve cake, or take photos. If you want to pause the movie for cake or a slideshow mid-way through, make sure to ask about timing and tech setup when booking.

Parking & Arrival Notes

Parking at The Domain is generally smooth — the closest garage to IPIC is the Orange Parking Garage, which is free and just a short walk to the theater entrance. There’s also limited street-level parking on Amy Donovan Plaza.

On weekends or during peak evening hours, it’s smart to tell guests to arrive 15–20 minutes early, especially if you’re asking parents to drop off or if guests will be ordering food right when they arrive.

Estimated Total Cost (Example for 18 Guests)

ItemCost
Private auditorium rental (36 seats)$736.56
Food & beverage minimum$1,080.00
20% gratuity on F&B$216.00
8.25% sales tax (on F&B)$89.10
Estimated Total$2,121.66

Note: Final cost will vary based on your menu selections, guest count, and any additional service fees (e.g., cake service or extended time).

2. Alamo Drafthouse (Mueller)

CategoryDetails
Location1911 Aldrich St Suite 120, Austin, TX 78723
Seats45 (Mueller location, may vary by venue)
Rental Fee$750
F&B Minimum$1,250 (plus 20% gratuity + 8.25% tax)
Ticket Cost$13.50 per guest
Outside Cake?Yes (with advance notice)
Party Room?No — celebration happens in the theater
ParkingPublic garage + street parking nearby

Alamo Drafthouse is iconic here in Austin — and if you’re going for that “we rented the whole theater” birthday experience, they absolutely deliver. The projection and sound are fantastic, the food is better than typical theater fare (hello loaded fries and bottomless popcorn), and they let you personalize parts of the experience, from what’s on screen to what’s on the menu.

That said? It’s not cheap. Especially if you’re booking a weekend evening.

When we looked into hosting a private birthday screening at Alamo’s Mueller location for a Saturday night, here’s the exact quote they gave us:

  • $750 to rent a 45-seat private theater
  • $1,250 food & beverage minimum
  • $13.50 per ticket x 45 guests = $607.50
  • 20% service charge = $521.50
  • 8.25% sales tax = $215.12

Grand total: $3,344.12

And that was for 45 seats. You’re not required to fill every seat, but if you’re screening a new release, you do have to pay for all of them — whether your guests show up or not.

What’s Included
  • A private 45-seat auditorium
  • Your movie of choice (from current releases or select older titles — but no Disney or Fox films)
  • Full dine-in food and beverage service from Alamo’s menu
  • The ability to show light custom content (photos, videos, trivia, etc.) before the movie
  • Staff and tech support during the event
  • Custom seating and service arrangements for your group
Cake Policy

Alamo does allow you to bring in cake or cupcakes for private events — just no other outside food. They’ll provide plates and napkins, and their staff can cut and serve the cake. Some locations may charge a small service fee for this, so always double-check when finalizing your booking.

There’s no separate party room, so plan to serve cake either before the movie starts or during the opening previews while everyone’s settling in. You can also arrange to pause the movie for a few minutes if you want to do a slideshow or Happy Birthday moment, but that needs to be discussed ahead of time.

Estimated Total Cost (Based on 45 Guests)

ItemCost
Venue Rental (45-seat auditorium)$750.00
Food & Beverage Minimum$1,250.00
Ticket Buyout (45 x $13.50)$607.50
20% Service Charge$521.50
8.25% Sales Tax$215.12
Estimated Grand Total$3,344.12

Note: This quote assumes you’re covering all food and beverage costs for guests. If your guests are paying individually, your personal total may be lower — but you’ll still be responsible for hitting the F&B minimum.

3. Violet Crown Austin (Downtown)

CategoryDetails
Location434 W. 2nd Street, Austin, TX 78701 (Downtown)
Seats~39 (private auditorium)
Rental Fee$780 flat (up to 3 hours)
Cake Fee$50 (includes extra 30 min + table)
Outside Food Allowed?Only cake/cupcakes (otherwise no)
Overtime Fee$50 per half‑hour
ParkingStreet / garage nearby (downtown)

If you want a birthday party that feels special without being over‑the‑top, Violet Crown in downtown Austin is a theater most parents don’t immediately think of — but the ones who discover it love it. It’s a locally known arthouse cinema with a cozy, stylish vibe, plush seating, and a much more intimate experience than a big multiplex, which makes it a nice middle ground between premium and budget‑friendly.

Violet Crown sits right in the 2nd Street District — a walkable, vibrant part of downtown with restaurants, shops, and easy street/garage parking nearby. If you’re throwing a party during the day, it’s fun to let families grab ice cream or a quick bite before or after the screening.

When I booked Violet Crown for my son’s birthday a few years back, they gave me a flat rental rate of $780 for a 3‑hour private booking of their auditorium (which seats up to 39 guests). That price gets you the whole space — up to a full private screening — without having to pay per ticket or worry about minimum spend requirements.

Pricing & What’s Included

Unlike some chains that base pricing on seat count or require huge minimums, Violet Crown was refreshingly straightforward. Their quoted flat rate covers exclusive use of the space for a set time window (typically about 3 hours), and you can bring a Blu‑ray to play your own content rather than only choosing from current releases — which gives you flexibility if you’re showing an older favorite like Harry Potter or something special for your kid.

On the event I booked:

  • We had access from approximately 3:45 pm to 6:45 pm — which was perfect for a late afternoon party leading into dinner or dessert.
  • The movie started right at 4:00 pm, giving us time beforehand to welcome guests and setup cupcakes.
  • Bringing our own Blu‑ray was allowed, which is rare among mainstream theaters.
Cake & Concessions

Violet Crown does allow you to bring a birthday cake or cupcakes, but there’s a mandatory $50 cake fee — and that includes an extra 30 minutes in the theater plus a small table with plates and napkins. That’s a nice touch, because it means you can do the cake bit inside the screening room without feeling squeezed for time.

Outside food and drinks are not permitted otherwise, but their concession menu is solid (and there’s plenty to choose from if you’d rather guests pay individually at the counter). If you pre‑order items for the whole group, they tack on a 25% gratuity on top of the food cost — something to keep in mind if you’re budgeting — but I thought it was fair given the level of service and quality.

Overtime & Policies

One thing I really appreciated with Violet Crown is how upfront they were about overtime. If your party runs later than your reserved window, they charge $50 per half‑hour — so it was easy to watch the clock once the credits rolled.

Their cancellation policy is pretty reasonable too: you can get a full refund if you cancel 48+ hours in advance — which gives you a bit of flexibility if weather or a schedule change happens.

Parking & Area Notes

Violet Crown’s downtown location (right off West 2nd Street) means there’s a mix of metered street parking and nearby garages. On weekend afternoons it’s generally not too bad, but if you’re booking an evening party on a Friday/Saturday, it’s worth telling families to plan for 10–15 extra minutes to find a spot — especially if folks are coming from out of the neighborhood. Being downtown also means you have plenty of places to grab shakes, tacos, or cupcakes afterward without having to get back in the car.

Overall, I found the downtown location to feel safe, walkable, and lively — a nice change of pace compared to the big‑box theaters in strip mall areas.

Estimated Total Cost (Example — Up to 39 Guests)

Overtime (optional: $50/30 min)$50 per 30 min
Typical NoteNo food & beverage minimum required

Note: Violet Crown’s quoted rate of $780 gives you a clean, simple private rental window without the complicated minimums and ticket buyouts that many chains require.

If you’re looking for a private movie theater rental that’s clean, comfortable, and won’t bury you in hidden fees, Galaxy Theatres at Highland is one of the most straightforward options in Austin. It’s not trying to be ultra-luxurious or hipster-artsy — it’s just a solid, family-friendly venue that makes private screenings easy.

When I reached out to the team there, they quoted me $750–$1,000 to rent their smallest auditorium for a private viewing of a current release film, which includes up to 48 guests. That’s a great headcount for most birthday parties, and one of the more generous capacity limits I’ve seen without a huge price tag.

What’s Included

The base rental covers:

  • A private auditorium for up to 48 people
  • Exclusive screening of a current release
  • Reserved seats for your group
  • Standard projection and audio setup
  • Staff on hand for guest service and tech support

They didn’t mention any ticket costs on top of the rental, which tells me tickets are built into the quote — another big difference from venues like Alamo that require you to pay per ticket separately.

Food, Drinks & Cake

Concessions are available for purchase (popcorn, soda, candy, etc.), and you can either cover that for the group or let each family pay individually. Galaxy does not require a food & beverage minimum — which is a big advantage if you’re trying to keep costs predictable.

You’re allowed to bring in a birthday cake or cupcakes for private events, but anything beyond that — like outside drinks, catering, or snacks — will trigger additional charges. Be sure to clarify what you’re planning with the manager ahead of time to avoid any day-of issues.

They didn’t quote me a specific cake fee, but I’d still expect a small cleanup or service charge if you’re asking for plates, setup, or extra staff support.

Parking & Arrival Tips

Galaxy Highland has free on-site parking in a surface lot directly outside the theater. It’s super convenient and easy for drop-offs, especially for younger guests. There’s no garage or downtown parking stress, which I appreciate more every year I have to haul a cake and goody bags anywhere.

Because it’s in a quieter retail area off Middle Fiskville, traffic’s not usually an issue. Still, if you’re doing a weekend showing, it’s smart to tell families to arrive 15 minutes early so the movie can start on time.

5. Cinemark (Southpark Meadows)

If you’re looking for a straightforward, no‑frills private screening option that’s easy to book and familiar to most families, Cinemark Southpark Meadows is one of the most down‑to‑earth picks in the Austin area. It doesn’t have the luxury bells and whistles of IPIC or the boutique style of Violet Crown, but what it does have is availability, consistent pricing, and a cinema environment parents and kids alike recognize.

Cinemark refers to their private bookings as “Premium Private Screenings,” and the process is actually pretty simple: you reserve a theater for your group during a specific movie showing, and that auditorium is yours — no other guests.

Pricing & Private Rental Details

Cinemark provides a basic starting price for private screenings that’s helpful when you’re budgeting. At Southpark Meadows, the smallest theater typically runs around $750–$1,100 for a private screening, depending on:

  • Day of the week (weekends are more expensive than weekday evenings)
  • Time of day (matinees tend to be cheaper than prime‑time nights)
  • Movie choice (newer releases or premium formats like XD may be higher)

The theater’s website offers a “Premium Private Screening” booking flow, where you can select the location, movie, date, and approximate headcount to get a price online — something not every chain theater offers. While prices can vary, this $750–$1,100 range is a reliable ballpark for weekend private screenings at Southpark Meadows based on recent quotes and booking results.

Depending on the movie and time you choose, you may also be able to see pricing per ticket for your group and make it a “block booking” — a hybrid between a private screening and reserved seat block — if you don’t need total exclusivity.

What’s Included

When you book a private screening at Cinemark Southpark Meadows:

  • Exclusive use of your auditorium for your group
  • A private showing of a selected movie
  • Standard projection, sound, and staff support
  • Access to concessions (popcorn, candy, drinks) for either purchase or group pre‑order

Different theaters have different seat counts and formats — some Cinemark auditoriums offer XD screens or Dolby Audio. Southpark Meadows offers both traditional and premium screens, so you can request whichever best fits your group size and vibe. Restaurants and casual dining options are a short walk away if you want dinner before or after the movie.

Cake & Outside Food Policy

Cinemark does not allow outside food or drinks for private screenings, with one common exception: many locations will allow a birthday cake or cupcakes at private events if you coordinate it ahead of time with the manager. Always confirm this when you’re booking — some theaters will charge a modest cake‑service fee or ask that the manager oversee cake cutting for safety reasons.

If you want to give kids juice boxes, fruit snacks, or anything beyond cake or cupcakes, plan on running that portion of the party before or after the screening in a nearby dining area or at home.

Note: Exact pricing depends on chosen movie, showtime, and whether you pre‑order snacks or let families purchase individually.

6. AMC Theatres (Barton Creek)

If you want a classic private screening that’s easy to book and predictable, AMC is one of the most straightforward chain options in Austin — especially the Barton Creek location. It doesn’t have the boutique charm of Violet Crown or the dine‑in luxury of IPIC, but for many families it’s a reliable “no surprises” theater rental with a clear process and fewer add‑ons.

One of the biggest advantages here is transparency in pricing and booking: AMC has a dedicated Private Theatre Rentals page where you can pick your location, set a date/time, and get an estimate without jumping through too many hoops.

What AMC Offers for Private Screenings

At Barton Creek — one of the larger AMC locations near West Austin — you can rent an entire auditorium for your group for a specific movie, similar to other chains like Cinemark. The private rental includes:

  • A fully private screening (no other theater guests)
  • Standard AMC seating (some recliners depending on auditorium)
  • Choice of a current movie title (based on availability)
  • Standard AMC picture and sound quality
  • The ability to pre‑order concessions for the group

Unlike Alamo Drafthouse or IPIC, AMC doesn’t offer dine‑in service, menus, or pre‑set party packages. But because of that simplicity, the pricing tends to be more predictable — and you won’t run into the mandatory high food & beverage minimums seen at dine‑in theaters.

AMC doesn’t generally allow outside food or beverages — with the exception of small birthday cakes or cupcakes for private events (as long as you confirm this with the manager when booking).

Pricing Snapshot (What You Can Expect)

AMC’s rentals are priced based on:

  • Auditorium size
  • Movie title (new release vs older library title)
  • Day and time (weekends and prime evening slots cost more)

For Barton Creek specifically, the starting point for a private screening rental is around $409 — though that’s a base rate that can rise depending on the title and time. Weekend evenings — especially for popular kids’ movies — can push the total higher.

One thing to note: AMC’s pricing doesn’t typically include concessions in the private rental rate. If you want popcorn, drinks, or candy for the group, those items can be pre‑ordered or purchased the day of, and they’ll be added to your final bill at checkout.

Also, while AMC’s rental page suggests a flat starting price, final totals include taxes and any applicable theater fees — so be sure to review the full quote before confirming your booking.

Here’s how AMC breaks it down in practice:

Ticket & Rental Pricing Example

For a Saturday afternoon private screening of a reasonably recent kids’ movie with around 25 guests, you might see something like:

ItemCost
Private auditorium rental (base rate)~$409
Additional ticket costs (if charged per head)~$0–$200*
Concessions (optional group order)~$100–$200
Sales tax & theater fees~$50–$100
Estimated Total$659–$909+

Some AMC rentals include tickets in the base rental cost; others add per‑ticket charges depending on the movie and size of auditorium. You’ll get exact detail when you request a quote.

What’s Included
  • A private screening of a current release of your choice
  • Reserved seating for your party
  • AMC’s signature sound and projection quality
  • If you want to show a custom video or slideshow, ask ahead of time — policies vary by location and availability of tech support
Cake & Outside Food Policy

AMC typically does not allow outside food or drinks, including snacks. However, for private events, many locations — including Barton Creek — will permit a birthday cake or cupcakes if you coordinate it with the theater manager in advance.

Make sure to ask whether:

  • There’s a small cake service fee
  • They can provide plates/utensils
  • You need to serve it before the movie starts

These details vary by manager and location, so it’s best to clarify when you book.

Best ForMedium to large birthday groups

If you’re thinking about renting a theater for a birthday party and want something that fits squarely in the “classic cinema experience” category, Regal is one of the most recognizable options after AMC and Cinemark — and they offer two distinct ways to book a private event:

  1. Private Watch Party (smaller groups, more affordable)
  2. Full Private Screening / Buyout (larger groups or custom content)

Both can work well for birthdays, but the experience and price points are meaningfully different — and a lot of parents don’t realize that Regal offers both options.

Private Watch Party (Smaller, More Affordable)

This is Regal’s lower‑cost entry into private events. It’s designed for groups that want:

  • A private auditorium or section just for the party
  • Entry to a current release at a specific showtime
  • A smaller group (usually up to ~30–40 people, depending on the theater)
  • A limited blackout on public ticket sales for that auditorium

The advantage here is obvious: you don’t have to buy out the whole theater, you just reserve a chunk of seats or a particular auditorium at a showtime. That keeps costs lower, especially if you’re booking a weekday or afternoon show. Regal often lets you do this for roughly $300–$700 depending on time, location, and availability, but because Regal’s website doesn’t publish these prices publicly, you’ll need to contact the events team for a quote.

In our experience, many parents end up using this option for birthdays that are less than 30 guests or where they don’t mind the group booking during a regular showtime.

What’s included with a Watch Party:

  • Reserved seats for your group
  • Private or semi‑private auditorium space
  • Standard Dolby Digital sound and projection
  • Access to concessions (popcorn, drinks, candy)

Limitations compared to full buyout:

  • You’re usually booking whatever movie is playing at that time (less flexibility on title)
  • You won’t necessarily have exclusive use of the entire auditorium (walk‑ins may be excluded, but staff manage this)
  • There’s not typically a separate celebration area

Parents often choose the Watch Party option when they want the cinema experience but are working with a tighter budget — and they’re willing to trade a little exclusivity for a lower price tag.

Full Private Screening / Buyout (Large Group & Custom Content)

The Full Private Screening option at Regal is what most people mean when they say “rent a movie theater for a birthday.” With this you:

  • Rent the entire auditorium — no public patrons
  • Choose from current releases or request custom content
  • Get access to the room before the screening for cake/announcements (timing varies by theater)
  • Still have access to concessions and a full snack bar

This option is ideal if you want to bring in a cake ceremony, run a slideshow, or pick a movie that’s not tied to the regular showtimes.

Typical price range:
Parents I’ve spoken to get quotes that fall around $600–$1,700+ for full buyouts at the Arboretum Regal depending on:

  • Day of week (weekends are higher)
  • Time of day (evenings are higher than matinees)
  • How many seats the auditorium has (100+ seats is standard)
  • Whether you’re choosing a first‑run release or something else

The exact quote depends on the theater’s availability and policy at the time you book — but in all cases I recommend asking for a line‑item quote so you can see:

  • Buyout fee or flat rental cost
  • Whether that includes seats/tickets or if guests pay separately
  • Any service charges/administrative fees
  • Sales tax
What’s Included (Regal Private Screening)
  • Full private use of the auditorium
  • A movie of your choosing (new release or sometimes older titles)
  • Standard projection and audio systems
  • Access to concessions for guests before/during the movie
  • Ability to conduct a cake moment before the movie (timing varies by theater)
Cake & Outside Food Policy

As with most mainstream theaters, Regal does not allow outside food and drinks during the screening. The one common exception — if confirmed with the theater manager ahead of time — is birthday cake or cupcakes. Most theaters will permit this for private events, especially if the staff manage the distribution to guests.

Always ask:

  • Whether there’s a cake fee
  • Whether you can access the auditorium before the movie to serve cake
  • Whether staff will provide plates/napkins

Even when cake is allowed, everything else (pizza, snacks, juice boxes for kids) should be handled outside the auditorium — often before or after the screening.

Estimated Total Cost (Example — 30 Guests)

ItemEstimated Cost
Private theater buyout$600–$1,700+
Pre‑ordered concessions (optional)$100–$200
Cake (if allowed)$0–$50

Note: Exact pricing depends on auditorium size, showtime, and policies at the specific Regal location.

8. EVO Cinemas (Belterra & Kyle)

CategoryDetails
LocationsEVO Cinemas + IMAX Belterra Village; EVO Entertainment Kyle Crossing
Primary Party Pricing$15.99–$38.99 per guest (entertainment packages)
Movie ScreeningGroup tickets paid separately; private screening possible by inquiry
ActivitiesBowling, arcade, casual dining
Outside Food?No (birthday cake often OK with advance notice)
ParkingFree surface lot at both locations

If you’re thinking about something that’s more than just a movie screening, EVO Cinemas is one of the more unique birthday party options near Austin. It combines a modern movie theater experience with arcade games, bowling, a restaurant/bar, and even an IMAX screen, giving families a way to mix movies with active entertainment in one place.

Unlike a traditional private theater rental where you only pay for a screening, EVO’s birthday party pricing is based on party packages that include food, games, and bowling (if you choose), and usually tickets to a movie are purchased separately. The packages are built around overall entertainment rather than just the cinema space.

What EVO Is Like

EVO Cinemas (especially at Belterra Village) is more like a full entertainment center than a classic cinema: you’ve got a gorgeous movie auditorium with IMAX options, but you also have bowling lanes, an arcade with more than 200 games, a bar, and in‑house dining right there.

For a birthday party, that means you can usually plan a multi‑phase party without moving locations: start with bowling or arcade time, do dinner, then catch a movie — all in one spot. That does make it trickier to isolate the “just private movie rental cost,” but it also gives you options most chain theaters don’t offer.

Birthday Party Packages (Entertainment‑Centric)

EVO’s party packages are priced per person and include a mix of games, bowling, food, and drinks — but not a private movie screening by default. If your priority is a private rental auditorium for a movie, you’ll likely need to purchase movie tickets separately or inquire about private screening pricing directly with their events contact.

Here’s a common party package breakdown (standard for many EVO locations, including Belterra & Kyle):

PackagePrice Per GuestIncludes
TEAL$15.99Choice of pizza or chicken tenders, unlimited soft drinks, 1 hr video games, 1 hr bowling, party host
LIME$19.99Same as TEAL
ORANGE$29.99Pizza or chicken tenders, unlimited drinks, 2 hrs gaming + bowling
MAGENTA$30.99Appetizer platters, drinks, games, bowling
VIOLET$38.99Full appetizer platters, more games & bowling

These are packages built for kids’ parties (10–24 guests) and include a party host to help manage the group. If you want to add a movie screening, you would typically buy group tickets to a showtime or ask an events rep whether a private screening option is possible, and at what cost.

Movie Rental / Private Screening Options

At EVO, private movie theater rentals are not typically part of the standard birthday packages — unlike Cinemark, AMC, or Alamo, where you can directly book an auditorium exclusively. Instead, your movie experience is usually:

  • Group tickets to a showtime (everyone sits together)
  • OR inquired separately for a private screen (depending on manager availability and cinema policy)

Because EVO combines entertainment spaces (bowling, arcade, dining) with cinema screens, private booking costs for the actual theater can vary and most party pricing tables you’ll see in marketing don’t include a private screening by default.

If you specifically want a private movie theater experience as part of your birthday, you’ll want to ask EVO’s events team:

  1. Whether they offer private auditorium rental at Belterra or Kyle
  2. What the cost structure is (flat rental fee vs tickets + room fee)
  3. Whether movie tickets are included or separate
  4. Any minimum food/drink spend if they require it (since their emphasis is on entertainment revenue)
  5. Their cake policy for private events
What’s Included in EVO Party Packages

Most kids’ party packages at EVO include:

  • Unlimited soft drinks for the group
  • Pizza or chicken tenders (varies by package)
  • Arcade game time
  • Bowling time (varies by package)
  • party host to coordinate the group
  • Casual dining setup in a reserved space

Again, a private movie screening is not included automatically; you’d need to purchase tickets separately or ask about a custom private screening quote.

Cake & Outside Food Policy

Because EVO’s party packages come with a built‑in food component, they generally don’t allow outside food or drinks beyond a birthday cake or cupcakes, and only with advance notice to ensure compliance with health/safety guidelines. Always confirm the cake policy directly with the events team so you’re clear on where and when cake can be served.

EVO Cinemas — Estimated Birthday Cost Example

Because EVO’s pricing is per person and entertainment‑package focused, here’s an example cost if you structured a combined movie + party package:

ItemEstimate
Party Package (e.g., ORANGE @ $29.99 x 15 guests)~$449.85
Additional Game/Bowling Upgrades~$80–$150
Movie Tickets (group)~$150–$225
Birthday Cake (allowed with notice)~$0–$50
Estimated Total$730–$875+

9. Moviehouse & Eatery by Cinépolis

If you’re after a private theater experience that feels a little fancier than a standard multiplex — without the dine‑in minimums or steep ticket buyouts of some premium venues — Moviehouse & Eatery by Cinépolis offers a middle ground worth considering. These theaters combine a comfortable movie environment with in‑theater dining and recliner seating, and they both offer private party rentals through the Cinépolis private events program.

What Makes Moviehouse & Eatery Different

Moviehouse & Eatery cinemas emphasize comfort + food service in a way that’s more upscale than a typical chain theater but not as elaborate as IPIC or Alamo’s dine‑in kitchens. Both the NW Austin (Trails at 620) and SW Austin (Southwest Parkway) locations have reclining seats, a full food & drink menu, and a vibe that works well for birthday parties where food and a cozy environment are part of the experience.

Parents I’ve talked to often pick Moviehouse & Eatery for birthdays because:

  • The seating is spacious and comfortable — ideal for younger and older guests alike.
  • The built‑in food & beverage service means you don’t have to juggle pizza runs or coordinate a separate dinner.
  • Cinépolis offers private party rentals that can include food & drink minimums with a tailored event quote.

Unlike a simple multiplex rental, Moviehouse & Eatery’s private events are handled through the Cinépolis “Private Parties” program — meaning you’ll fill out an event request form or contact the sales team to get a tailored proposal.

Pricing & Private Event Details

Moviehouse & Eatery doesn’t publicly publish set birthday prices, but here’s what you need to know when requesting a quote:

  • Private Watch Parties or Screenings — You can request exclusive rental of a screening room or auditorium. Pricing is usually based on the day/time, group size, and menu minimum you plan to hit.
  • Food & Beverage Minimums — Cinépolis often requires a minimum spend on food/drinks for private events; this can be met via individual tabs or a group tab
  • Service Fees — If your private event includes table service or dedicated staff support, expect a service charge (often around 20–25%) on food and beverage orders.

Because these details are tied to the specific date/time and your guest count, they’re quote‑based only — but in my research and discussions with other local parents, a typical midweek or afternoon private event tends to fall in the low‑to‑mid hundreds to ~$1,000+ range once all food and minimums are included (much like Alamo, but often without the same rigid minimums).

Important: Moviehouse & Eatery’s event Inquiry form is the key to getting accurate pricing — you can submit your details and they’ll reply with a proposal within a few days.

What’s Typically Included

For most Moviehouse & Eatery private events:

  • Exclusive or semi‑exclusive auditorium use for your group
  • Food & beverage service (you choose items to contribute toward your minimum)
  • Standard projection and sound quality
  • Dedicated event support from theater staff
  • Option to pre‑order menu items and concessions

Moviehouse & Eatery’s setup is less about selling the space alone and more about crafting an event package that includes the space, the food, and the overall experience — which can be great for parents who want the birthday meal and movie in one place

Cake & Outside Food Policy

Like many theaters with full food programs, Moviehouse & Eatery generally does not allow outside food or drinks, with cake/cupcakes being the only common exception for a private party. Because the cinema has a full menu, the expectation is that most food is purchased through the venue, but most event managers will allow a cake brought in for a birthday moment — just be sure to confirm when you submit your event inquiry.

If they require a cake‑service fee or a small staff setup charge, those details should be included in the quote you receive.

Estimated Total Cost (Example — 25 Guests)

Because Moviehouse & Eatery pricing is quote‑based and depends on your food & drink minimum, here’s a realistic sample:

ItemEstimated Cost

Food & Beverage Minimum~$500–$1,000+
20–25% Service Charge (on F&B)~$100–$250+

10. Why We Chose to Start Backyard Starz (And Why It Might Be a Better Fit for Your Family)

After attending a few incredible movie theater birthday parties around Austin — and paying the hefty invoices that came with them — I started to wonder: what if we could bring the magic of the big screen into our own backyard?

No food minimums. No rush to get through cake before the previews end. No complicated rental contracts or “only cupcakes allowed” rules. Just a cozy, outdoor setup where the kids could sprawl out in chairs, eat popcorn under the stars, and enjoy a night that felt special — without all the stress.

And that’s how Backyard Starz was born.

What We Offer

Backyard Starz is a mobile, inflatable movie theater that comes to you. We bring the screen, the sound, the lounge chairs, and the projector — all you need to do is pick the movie and invite your guests.

We offer two packages:

DIY Package — $349
  • 18-ft screen
  • 12 inflatable chairs
  • 2 speakers + projector
  • Setup instructions and easy drop-off/pick-up
  • Perfect if you like a little hands-on action and want to save on labor
Full Setup & Takedown Package — $449
  • Everything above, plus:
    • Our team sets up the whole system
    • We return after the event to break it down
    • Great for busy parents who just want to show up and press play

We also offer our Party Package with more seating (up to 18 inflatable chairs) and a 20-ft screen for larger events.

Our equipment is professional-grade — not the grainy backyard projector you saw at that one neighborhood block party. Kids get blown away when they realize they’re watching a real movie on a screen this big, with sound that fills the yard.

Why Families Choose Backyard Starz

Most people don’t even think to consider a backyard theater rental — until they see one in action.

Here’s what makes it work so well:

  • Total flexibility: You pick the time. You pick the movie. You pick the food.
  • No restrictions: Bring whatever snacks, drinks, pizza, or birthday cake you want. No one’s saying “sorry, outside food isn’t allowed.”
  • No ticket minimums or per-head pricing: Whether you invite 6 kids or 20, your price stays the same.
  • Stress-free setup: We walk you through everything — or handle it for you.
  • Magical atmosphere: There’s something about watching a movie outdoors with friends that turns an ordinary backyard into something unforgettable.

Plus, for what many theaters charge just for the venue rental, you’re getting an entire backyard experience — and you keep full control over the night. Want to pause the movie for a cake break? Go for it. Want to start early with lawn games or bubbles? We’re here for it

Is Backyard Starz Right for You?

Look — if your kid is dreaming of a giant screen at a “real” movie theater, and the budget allows it, there are some amazing venues in town. But if you want:

  • A more relaxed, fun, and personal birthday
  • A budget-friendly way to make a big impression
  • A party that’s easy to plan and totally customizable

…then Backyard Starz might be the better fit.

And honestly? Most of the families we’ve worked with tell us afterward that it ended up being even more memorable than a traditional theater party.

So if you’re interested, head to backyardstarz.com to check availability, view packages, or reach out with questions. We’d love to help you throw the kind of birthday your kid will be talking about all year.

    Know Before You Go

By the time you’re actually ready to book a movie theater birthday party, you’ve probably already done the hard part: you picked a venue, you found a date, and your kid has announced (loudly) which movie is “non-negotiable.”

What catches most parents off guard is everything around the movie: refund rules, who’s supervising, what happens if kids get restless, and whether the theater staff is actually helping you… or just handing you a room and disappearing.

Here are the big “mom lessons learned” I’d keep in mind.

    Cancellation & Refund Policies

If there’s one thing I’ve learned planning kids’ birthdays, it’s that life happens. Someone wakes up sick. A cousin’s wedding gets rescheduled. A cold front rolls in. Half your RSVPs suddenly turn into “we might be late.”

The hard part is that theaters don’t treat cancellations the same way:

    • Some places will give you a full refund if you cancel by a certain deadline (Violet Crown was very reasonable here when I booked).
    • Others will offer a credit or partial refund.
    • Some are basically “once it’s booked, it’s booked,” especially if the theater is holding a premium slot or staffing your event specifically.

What you want to clarify before you pay anything:

    • Is my booking fee refundable?
    • Is the food & beverage minimum refundable if we cancel?
    • Can I reschedule instead of canceling?
    • If our guest count drops, do we still pay the same amount?

    Cake & Outside Food

Most theaters have a blanket rule: no outside food or drink. But birthdays are the one time they’ll often bend — usually for cake or cupcakes — and the details matter.

    Here’s what can vary:

    • Whether cake is allowed at all (most say yes, but not always automatically)
    • Whether there’s a cake cutting fee or “cake service” fee
    • Whether the staff needs to be the one to cut and serve it (common at dine-in theaters)
    • Whether cake has to be served before the movie, not during
    • Whether you’re allowed to bring plates/napkins or you have to use theirs

And here’s the important part: even if cake is allowed, it doesn’t mean you’ll have a good place to serve it. A lot of venues don’t have party rooms. So you may be trying to serve cupcakes… in the hallway… while families are lining up for the next show.

    Supervision

This one is huge, and it catches parents off guard.

Most theaters are not staffed to manage a group of 15–25 kids like a kid’s party venue would. They’ll provide:

    • ticket/check-in help
    • concession help
    • sometimes an event rep

…but they are not there to supervise behavior.

So if you were thinking “I’ll just drop them off and pick them up after the movie,” make sure you understand what the venue expects. Some theaters:

    • require an adult to stay on-site
    • recommend a ratio like 1 adult per 6–10 kids
    • will intervene only if something becomes disruptive (which is not what you want to happen mid-party)

Tip: Even if you’re doing a drop-off vibe, recruit at least one other parent or family member to help you “float” — bathrooms, spills, keeping kids from wandering, etc.

Insurance, Waivers, and “Official Event” Stuff

This isn’t always required for a small birthday group, but it comes up more than people expect — especially when:

    • your group is larger (school team / big family gathering)
    • you’re booking through a corporate events process
    • you’re bringing vendors (photographer, balloon arch setup, character performer)
    • you want to use custom media or special equipment

    Some venues may require:

    • signing a liability waiver
    • agreeing to specific conduct rules
    • providing proof of insurance if it’s a larger “event” versus a casual booking

Even when insurance isn’t required, contracts often include strict language like:

    • you’re responsible for damages
    • you’re responsible for guest behavior
    • you may be charged cleaning fees for spills/confetti/etc.

    Tip:
If you’re planning balloons, a backdrop, confetti poppers (please don’t), or anything “extra,” ask first. Some theaters are very strict about decorations.

    Movie Availability & Licensing

    This is another sneaky one.

Even in a private screening, theaters are limited by:

    • what studios allow
    • what’s currently in distribution
    • licensing restrictions (Disney/Fox restrictions come up at certain venues)
    • whether the theater can play outside content at all

Some theaters only allow current releases. Some are flexible if you bring a Blu-ray. A few allow personal content (slideshows, home videos) — but require it to be submitted early and in a specific format.

    What to ask:

    • Can we pick any movie, or only what’s currently showing?
    • If it’s a private screening, are there studio restrictions?
    • If we bring a Blu-ray, what formats do you accept and do you need it in advance?
    • If we want to show a short slideshow, can you do that and what’s the deadline?

    Food & Beverage Minimums

This is where parents get shocked.

At some venues, the “rental” is only part of the spend. Your real cost is:

    • rental fee
    • ticket buyout (sometimes)
    • food & beverage minimum
    • gratuity/service charge (often 20%+)
    • sales tax

It’s not unusual for a $700 quote to turn into a $1,100+ invoice once everything stacks.

    Smart questions:

    • Is the minimum based on pre-tax or post-tax totals?
    • Does gratuity count toward the minimum?
    • If we don’t hit the minimum, do we pay the difference?
    • Can guests pay individually and still count toward the minimum?

    Final Reminder (Mom-to-Mom)

    Before you book, ask for:

    1. the total estimated cost with tax and service included
    2. cancellation/refund terms in writing
    3. cake policy + where it can be served
    4. who is supervising (you) vs who is assisting (them)

It takes five extra minutes up front and can save you a very expensive surprise later.

    FAQs

How much does it cost to rent a movie theater for a birthday party in Austin?

It really depends on the venue and whether you’re doing a full private buyout or a smaller group booking. In Austin, most families land somewhere between $750 and $3,500+ for a true private screening once you include food minimums, service charges, and tax.
If you want a budget-friendly option, some chains offer smaller private rentals starting around $400+, but pricing changes a lot based on the movie and time slot.

What’s the cheapest way to do a movie theater birthday party?

    Usually one of these:

    • Book a group outing to a regular showtime (not private) and just buy a block of tickets.
    • Choose a theater that doesn’t require a food & beverage minimum (those minimums are what really inflate the invoice).
    • Book a weekday or matinee time slot — Friday and Saturday evenings are almost always the priciest.
Do I have to pay for every seat even if not everyone shows up?

Sometimes, yes — especially for private screenings of new releases, where the theater is essentially selling you the whole room.
If it’s a per-ticket group booking, then no — but with true buyouts you should assume you’re paying for the space, not just the guests who attend. Always ask: “Is this priced per guest or per auditorium?”

Can I choose any movie I want?

Not always. Many theaters limit you to:

    • Current releases only, or
    • A curated list of titles they can license

Some places also have studio restrictions (for example, some private events can’t include certain Disney/Fox titles).
If you’re hoping to show a specific older favorite (Harry Potter, Spider-Verse, etc.), ask whether the theater allows Blu-ray/owned content or if they can license it for you.

Can I bring my own movie (Blu-ray or streaming)?

    This varies a lot:

    • Some theaters will allow Blu-ray playback for private rentals (this is one reason Violet Crown is special).
    • Most big chains prefer current theatrical titles only.
    • Streaming is tricky — theaters typically won’t let you log into Netflix/Disney+ on their system.

If BYO content matters to you, ask:

    • What formats they accept (Blu-ray, HDMI laptop, etc.)
    • Whether they need the content submitted ahead of time
    • Whether they can pause the film for cake or announcements
Can I bring cake, cupcakes, or outside food?

Most theaters don’t allow outside food — but cake or cupcakes are commonly allowed, especially for private events. Some venues:

    • charge a cake fee
    • require staff to cut/serve it
    • only allow it in specific areas (party room vs inside theater)

    If cake is important, confirm:

    • where it can be served
    • when it can happen (before the movie is usually easiest)
    • whether plates/napkins are provided
Do theaters provide a party room?

Some do, some don’t. And even when they do, it’s not always included in the rental price.
If you want presents, pizza, and chaos outside the theater (which honestly can be helpful), ask:

    • Is there a party room available?
    • How long do we get it?
    • Is there an extra fee?
    What’s a food & beverage minimum?

A food & beverage minimum is the amount your group is required to spend on food and drinks. If you don’t hit it, you pay the difference. This is very common at dine-in venues.
What parents often miss is that minimums are usually before tax and gratuity, meaning your actual total will be higher once those are added.

Can guests pay for their own food instead of me covering everything?

Often yes — and this can make a huge difference in out-of-pocket cost. Some venues let guests order individually and still count those purchases toward the minimum. Others require a single host tab.
    Ask:

    • Can guests pay individually?
    • If they do, does it still count toward the minimum?
How far in advance should I book?

For the best time slots (weekend afternoons and early evenings), I’d aim for 3–6 weeks out — longer if it’s a holiday season.
Weekdays are often easier to book and less expensive.

    Are private screenings worth it?

They can be — especially if your kid is movie-obsessed and you want a simple “everyone shows up, sits down, and enjoys” party.
But the tradeoff is cost and flexibility. If you’re trying to keep things affordable and relaxed, a backyard setup can feel just as special without the minimums and restrictions.

Is Backyard Starz really cheaper than renting a theater?

In most cases, yes — because there are no ticket buyouts, no food minimums, and no service charges. It’s a flat package price, and you control everything: snacks, cake, schedule, and movie choice.
It’s also easier if you want the party to feel more personal and less rushed.
